True. But also unfair to whites.
However, most conservative "leaders" lack the courage to defend whites.
When the meritocracy is eroded, civilization declines.
Interesting. 1310 was my exact score on the old SAT.
Looks like I got into an Ivy by the skin of my teeth.
That's nothing to be ashamed of. I knew lots of fellow students who got less than 1450.
You should instead be proud of having accomplished what you have, despite your demonstrable intellectual disadvantages.
(Heh-heh!)
Regards,
Lol, good one.
Disgraceful.
A good job on reporting by Professor Gersen, who is a contributing writer at The New Yorker.
It shines an unflattering light on Harvard, the judge (Burroughs) and the Federal official (Hibino) who made light of qualified candidates not being able to get admittance to Harvard and just as concerning tried to cover up the contents of the memo from being disclosed. The judge especially looks bad.
Revealing an old secret that applicants from flyover states also get the advantage of reduced standards. (SATs in the 1300s? For Harvard?)
Were you from “Sparse Country”?
The search for remedial equality can’t get beyond the point that the reason for inequality is inequality
She told me once that a classmate of hers, who was a "Vice Chancellor" in Harvard's admissions office, told her that were it not for Harvard's detailed admissions policies every year's Freshman class would consist entirely of Asians and Jews.
In a nation where “equity” is the law of the land I will demand that at every moment of every NBA game at least 70% of the players on the floor for both teams must be white.
Whites that play basketball are not thoroughbreds
I was from a lower-middle-class area that was traditionally overlooked.
Most, not all, Ivy athletes who matriculate score in the 1200 to 1300 range on the SAT. There are no sports scholarships in the Ivy League.
These are the old SAT scores I’m referencing...I have no idea how the new scoring numbers work. A 1300 SAT from back in the day (the 1980s) put you at the 90th percentile, which was more than adequate to do coursework at the Ivy level.
But usually not nearly enough for admission unless a legacy, favored minority, varsity athlete, “sparse country”, spawn of a big celebrity or massive donor, killer oboe player, etc.
And as to “adequate work”, the gentleman’s C originated in the Ivy League, but those scores would likely leave one lost in certain classes and majors.
*And the gentleman’s C is now a his/her/their baseline A-.
I had a roommate in Alaska (summer cannery job) for two summers who scored 1600 on his SAT’s and was awarded a scholarship to Princeton.
White guy. A good guy, very smart.
I somehow don’t think he’d be treated the same way today...
You are correct. A class like Math 55 at Harvard has a 50% dropout rate.
MIT, down the street in Cambridge, has a much stronger STEM curriculum and the student body reflects that.
