A Flatonia (Texas) man was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a shooting in the Shiner area on Sunday, March 5. In an interview on Monday, March 6, Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon said that the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 12:55 a.m. According to Sheriff Harmon, it was in reference to a gunshot victim in the 3400 block of Highway 90A east of... (subscription required to get more from this source).

From the Fayette County Record, the Postmaster is Michael Joseph McKim and he shot a man who according to "Sheriff Harmon" "...was inside his (own) residence with a woman who was married to another man (McKim). "Harmon said McKim was the husband of the female. Harmon told La Vaca County Today (another source) that McKim was trying to find his wife with the help of his daughter, who used a cellphone locator to track her location."

Now for something completely different. Instead of shooting each other at the post office, the postal employees are going postal on society. Lots of news is not making out to the public. I had to put in extra effort to get this out.

Guess what? As far as I know , a homicide of a 3rd party where a husband or wife is caught cheating, is not murder in Texas.

You would think postal workers would start by shooting at the dogs that gave them a nip or two.

That said, back in the day, a good newspaper editor would dream of such headlines as,

"Mail Deliveryman Goes Postal on Society!"
You can almost hear newsboys screaming that headline on the street corners of Manhattan back in 1935.

It is today (generally). But I know for a fact it wasn’t in 63. And functionally it was still coming out that way again in 81.
It used to be very dicey business to mess with another man’s wife in Texas, or even to insult her.

Based on the mugshot, he doesn’t look too broke up about it.

That’s a story

Often the sentiment was such that a jury wouldn’t convict but it’s not the law

“I was cutting a rug
Down at place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lou
When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who
He said, “Hey there, fellow
With the hair colored yellow
Whatcha tryin’ to prove?
‘Cause that’s my woman there
And I’m a man who cares
And this might be all for you”
I said, “excuse me?”

I was scared and fearing for my life
I was shaking like a leaf on a tree
‘Cause he was lean, mean
Big and bad, Lord
Pointin’ that gun at me
“Oh, wait a minute, mister
I didn’t even kiss her
Don’t want no trouble with you
And I know you don’t owe me
But I wish you’d let me
Ask one favor from you”

“Oh, won’t you
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
And you’ll never see me no more”

For, sure

Well the crowd cleared away
And I began to pray
And my water fell on the floor
And I’m telling you, son
Well, it ain’t no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four
Well, he turned and screamed at Linda Lou
And that’s the break I was looking for
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
As I was headed out toward the door

“Oh, won’t you
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
And you’ll never see me no more”

Show me the back door”

I wonder what the terrain looks like in a place called “Flatonia”

You got it right. My step sister lives in Flatonia and can attest to the lack of elevated terrain.

It’s pretty flat. I actually spent a night in Flatonia about 30 years ago, when I was driving a U-Haul from Tucson to Gainesville, FL for my sister. We stayed at Grumpy’s (chose it because my nephew was getting cranky after a long day on the road).

I was in Pontiac Illinois (not Michigan) once and I swear it was about as flat as calm seas. It seemed you could actually see the next five miles of road
