PARIS (AP) – Roads blocked, oil refineries disrupted, planes grounded and trains halted – unions are threatening to shut down France’s economy this week in what they hope is their toughest riposte yet to President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age.

The first actions are expected Monday, as truckers are being urged to block major highway arteries and interchanges in go-slow actions dubbed “escargot” (snail) operations. Unions plan an open-ended strike on the national rail service starting Monday evening.

The government is bracing for the biggest disruptions on Tuesday, when strikes are expected across multiple sectors and protests are planned in cities across France against the retirement bill. The reform, which would raise the official pension age from 62 to 64 and require 43 years of work to earn a full pension, is currently under debate in parliament.

The folks in Canada are subordinate to a system that keeps corporate taxes way low at 15 percent.

For all its flaws, the Canadian system works much better for employers than the U.S. system does.

One big difference is that Canada's government-run health care system is funded directly by the taxpayers. Health insurance costs aren't a giant anchor around the necks of Canadian employers the way they are down here in the U.S.

Politically, the Canadian system is much more honest: "If you want 'free' sh!t, you'll pay for it yourself."

The Liberal Party always was Liberal about Capitalism. That’s the essence of its original core beliefs.

Trudeau carries on the “pay to play” tradition of corruption.

Social Liberalism is the drug used by the Liberal Party to distract the working people from the pro-business policies of the Liberal Party.

What should the retirement age be?

67? 70? Death?

Historically it was death, and that came very early

That is an extremely valid point.

In the US it is the opposite. The lines of those wanting the gimme are also demanding someone else pay for it. It cuts across party lines.

So if we want a SS plan, then we must increase taxes. Full stop.
Or we remove benefits. Full stop.

Most want benefits but not to pay for it.

The French revolution set the standard for French politics - riot when you don’t get what you want.

My ex son-in-law has been milking SSDI for 30 years now. I ratted him out with facts and figures a long time ago and absolutely nothing was ever done about it.

They have no choice. Low birth rare. And crappy immigrants.

I know many FReepers complain about our immigrants. But they are high quality. And they assimilate. You don't see that with Muslims in France. Plus the French society is more elitist than ours.
