The bloody battle for Bakhmut is about to become even more difficult as warmer weather conditions set in, the British Ministry of Defence said.
In its latest assessment of the conflict in Ukraine, which hit the one-year mark on February 24, the ministry said that rising temperatures are now creating the muddy conditions known in Ukrainian as “bezdorizhzhia,” limiting cross-country movement around (CCM) in Bakhmut, in the eastern Donetsk region.
Russian forces, alongside Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner Group, have been pouring fighters into the region since July 2022 in an attempt to capture it. Seizing the small industrial city is part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stated war goals. He has said his “special military operation” aims to capture the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, collectively known as the Donbas.
Poor CCM, the defense ministry said, typically provides some military advantage to defending forces.
“Daytime soil temperatures have risen and are now largely above freezing. As experienced since mid-February 2023, overnight freeze and daytime thaw remains likely until next week,” it said. “Forecast warmer than average conditions for the remainder of winter and spring will further reduce CCM.”
The British defense ministry said it is almost certain that by late-March CCM will be at its worst following the final thaw.
“This will add further friction to ground operations and hamper the off-road movement of heavier armoured vehicles, especially over churned-up ground in the Bakhmut sector,” it added.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a think tank based in Washington, said in its latest assessment of the conflict that Russian forces conducted ground attacks around Bakhmut on Wednesday.

Torture chambers in Ukraine’s Kherson ‘financed by Russian state’ -investigators

THE HAGUE (Reuters) -A network of at least 20 torture chambers in the recently liberated southern Ukrainian region of Kherson was “planned and directly financed by the Russian State,” war crimes investigators said on Thursday, citing new evidence.
The Mobile Justice Team, funded by Britain, the EU and the United States, has been working with Ukrainian war crimes prosecutors across Ukraine and in Kherson since it was reclaimed from Russian forces in November after more than eight months of occupation.
The Kremlin press office did not respond to a request for comment.
Reuters reported on the scale of torture chambers in Kherson in January, when Ukrainian authorities said around 200 people had allegedly been tortured at 10 locations. Survivors told Reuters about being tortured, including electric shocks and suffocation techniques.
Moscow, which has said it is conducting a “special military operation” in Ukraine, has denied committing war crimes or targeting civilians.
The mobile team, established in May 2022 by the Global Rights Compliance humanitarian law firm and backed by international experts, is supporting Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General as it reviews more than 71,000 reports of war crimes nationwide since the Feb. 24, 2022, invasion.
“New evidence collected from recently liberated Kherson reveals torture chambers were planned and directly financed by the Russian State,” the team, established by British attorney Wayne Jordash, said in a statement.
Witnesses described the use of electric shock torture and waterboarding by Russian forces. At least 1,000 torture chamber survivors have submitted evidence to investigators and more than 400 people had been reported as missing from Kherson, it said.
Funding a network of torture facilities was part of a Russian state plan to “subjugate, re-educate or kill Ukrainian civic leaders and ordinary dissenters,” the team said.
Torture centres were operated by different Russian security agencies, including the Russian Federal Security Services (FSB), local Kherson FSB and the Russian Prison Service, it said.
An investigation is also underway by the International Criminal Court, part of a both domestic and international efforts to hold those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide across Ukraine to account.

In the second half of August, the Russians were stating that they were occupying some positions in the town of Bakhmut, on its eastern edge, namely on Patrice Lumumba Street. At that time, the Wagnerites occupied several houses on the outskirts of the town. We - Nastia Stanko and Kolian Pastyko - got to Bakhmut at the end of February.
This is our sixth visit to this city since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. In May, we ate in a pizzeria in the town’s center. In June, we were in the hospital, which was considered to be quite remote from the frontlines. In July, the fighting was on the outskirts of Bakhmut, but the active shelling of the town had already begun.
We remember that in July 2022, the military did not want to take us to the place where we had arrived at the end of February 2023. In mid-August, when the battles approached the eastern outskirts of Bakhmut, the 93rd Brigade, which had been redeployed here from the Izium direction, took up positions here. It held the lines until October, then went on a two-week rotation and returned to the town until December.
At the end of 2022, our crew witnessed the work of the brigade’s medical company at the medevac point in Bakhmut. Today, the street where this medevac point was located is being shelled by ATGMs. The brigade went for another month of recuperation and returned to Bakhmut to fight in the streets. Our report features the newly mobilized, crew of an infantry fighting vehicle that comes within 8 meters of the Russians, and Roman Ratushnyi’s activist and friend from Donbas, who uses a drone to adjust artillery fire to destroy Russian tanks and infantry.
It’s no secret that it’s hard here. And there is almost nowhere to retreat in the city. But Bakhmut is a fortress. And it is still standing.
