I’d have to think this one through. Even back 40+ years ago some people suggested that we continue our massive defense spending and go to all these regional wars because federal war spending is what got us out of the Great Depression.

But this Ukraine thing is much more problematic. I think in part it was easy to rally large support because Russia Russia Russia mantra. Putin is acting horribly evil but the whole “Russia stole the election” and “Trump is Putin’s puppet” stuff made it easier to sell. But I also cannot disconnect all that from the whole Hunter Biden $1 million Burisma deal, Joe Biden’s blackmail to stop the investigation into Burisma, Trump’s phone call asking for information, and the impeachment of Trump over that phone call. Something else about Ukraine itself going on here. We probably had a hand in blowing up that pipeline to keep Germany in our camp; and there are probably those in the national security apparatus that think it’s a great idea to turn Ukraine into a client state so we can exert more influence over Europe.

Now I am worried about China supporting Russia the way we support Ukraine. It’s costing us money and ammunition and we have a handful of advisors. China could throw money and munitions to Russia too. Then we’re in a bigger proxy war. And China is eying not just Taiwan but northeastern Russia. They may not invade Russia but they sure want access to their resources. Biden’s rhetoric has boxed us into a corner we may not be able to get out of without losing a lot of face and influence - or, escalating further. The rest of the world is watching and the more distracted and weakened we look the more they will make their own regional moves.

The neocons are doing everything they can to escalate things, I don’t think they will back down unless forced to by public opinion both here and in Europe. They are trying to slow walk us into WW3.
