Large modern windmills need diesel power to rotate the blades when they are not being turned by the wind. The blades will sag and collapse if they are not rotated.

I’d like to know how the wind turbines in Sweetwater TX did during the recent ice storm. If you zoom in on Google satellite, you can see that a lot of them have old or replacement blades sitting on the ground next to them.

That doesn’t explain the hundreds of “modern windmills” I have seen simply not moving.
