US Official Warns Of Risks Posed By Heavy Electric Vehicles

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board expressed concern Wednesday about the safety risks that heavy electric vehicles pose if they collide with lighter vehicles.

The official, Jennifer Homendy, raised the issue in a speech in Washington to the Transportation Research Board. She noted, by way of example, that an electric GMC Hummer weighs about 9,000 pounds (4,000 kilograms), with a battery pack that alone is 2,900 pounds (1,300 kilograms) — roughly the entire weight of a typical Honda Civic.

“I’m concerned about the increased risk of severe injury and death for all road users from heavier curb weights and increasing size, power, and performance of vehicles on our roads, including electric vehicles,” Homendy said in remarks prepared for the group.

The extra weight that EVs typically carry stems from the outsize mass of their batteries. To achieve 300 or more miles (480 or more kilometers) of range per charge from an EV, batteries have to weigh thousands of pounds.

Was this another violation of the “Law of Unintended Consequences” by this rogue regime?

So the answer is to ban all small fuel efficient vehicles and save the bigger pickups....

Mine weighs 7800lbs and gets 9.2mpg !!

What about the damage to infrastructure from increased gross weights?

It's basic physics of relative mass and energy transfer.

I once knew a guy who chewed tobacco and had a styrofoam spit cup sitting on the center hump of his mid-70's pontiac bonneville (classy, no?) who had a little honda civic pull out in front of him. The civic got obliterated. Fiberglass fragments all over the road. The spit cup in the pontiac never even spilled over.

Also, this: Ode to Harry

The obvious government answer is to immediately take steps to ban all ICE powered vehicles, which they are going to do anyway, this is just 10 years sooner than the plan.

Stay OUT of California and parking garages, and IN the right hand lane.

Raise insurance rates for lighter vehicles.
Check load restriction on every bridge and overpass in America.

… the Biden administration’s plans to phase out carbon emissions from vehicles to deal with the climate crisis.

Is that the same climate crisis that caused the ice sheets to melt 15,000 or so years ago?

Also they should pay double the road taxes since they do twice the damage to the road.

“The head of the National Transportation Safety Board expressed concern”

That’s the problem here. The NTSB is FULLY INDEPENDENT, and so they’re allowed to tell the truth, rather than have to spin this stuff for the EV Cheerleaders.

“I once knew a guy who chewed tobacco and had a styrofoam spit cup sitting on the center hump of his mid-70’s pontiac bonneville (classy, no?) who had a little honda civic pull out in front of him.”

The 73 Pontiacs had bumpers that gave it the capability to ram its way into Ft. Knox. And yes, the Bonneville was a BEAUTY.

Translation: Us Democrats will never be satisfied. Even after we make you plebes switch over to EV's we'll figure out a reason you can't drive those either.
