DeSantis Takes Aim at Teacher Union Dues
Tallahassee Reports ^ | December 20th 2022 | Jim Saunders

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis has signaled that he will make a priority of passing a long-debated proposal that would prevent teachers from having union dues deducted from their paychecks.

DeSantis supported the proposal Monday during a speech in Orlando, describing it as “paycheck protection legislation.” The Florida Education Association and other teachers unions backed DeSantis’ Democratic challenger, Charlie Crist, in the Nov. 8 election, with Miami-Dade County teachers union leader Karla Hernandez serving as Crist’s running mate.

DeSantis also has battled unions in recent years about issues such as reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. During what was described as a “Freedom Blueprint” speech Monday, he tied the union-dues idea to raising pay for teachers during the 2023 legislative session.

Under such a proposal, teachers would have to pay union dues separately, making it less convenient. DeSantis said the proposal “maximizes freedom to choose, and I think it will be a more-accurate reflection of who actually wants to be part of this or not.”

The proposals have drawn fierce opposition from unions and Democrats, as such changes could make it harder for unions to get funded.

While a bill addressing the union issues had not been filed as of Tuesday morning, DeSantis also indicated he supports setting a threshold for unions to represent teachers. That threshold would involve at least 50 percent of teachers being members of the unions.

“If they don’t have a majority of the teachers who are actually signing up to pay dues, it should be decertified,” DeSantis said. “You shouldn’t be able to continue as a zombie organization that doesn’t have the support of the people you are negotiating for.”

DeSantis also said he wanted government out of the bill collector role for union dues. Under current law, Florida workers, including teachers, can opt out of joining their union, but if teachers don’t opt out, their union dues are automatically deducted from their paychecks.

Love our Gov!

Fighting the teachers unions is a national priority. DeSantis doing this earns him huge points with me.

DeSantis is exactly correct. This is America. You are free to associate with a union if you want to. You should be free to disassociate from it, or to never join it, too. Taking dues directly from a paycheck should be taboo.

There are millions of employees nationwide who are entitled to a refund of all their union dues plus interest for those unions that failed to defend their members against Pfascist government and korporate mandates to take the Jim Jones Jab.

The fact that the unions sided with governments and korporations was a clear indicator that they unions do NOT represent the employees.

It should have been an easy case where the unions said, "All will work or none will work, and that includes members of other unions as well." Instead the unions turned on their members.

Gov Walker, here in WI, was an incredibly brave and strong leader on this front. He faced more political heat than anybody in this fight. And he won. Three elections in 2 terms - beat the big money against him in a recall. He had dirtbags literally living and crapping in the capitol, all the national forces against him.

And he still broke the back of the seemingly all-powerful BigEd. Which is the state level version of the deep state.

He and the R legislature gained teachers freedom to choose whether or not to join the union(s). They quit in droves.

Keep up the good works, Gov Ron!

Ron DeSantis continues to go after a variety of institutions and practices in which the political left has enjoyed hedgemony for far, far too long.

But somehow this is all a ruse, because he's really a vassal of the Deep State. < /s>

Good reminder of what Gov Walker did in WI.

His crusade against rat teacher unions was incredible.

And the good people of Wisconsin-—

On November 6, 2018, the people of Wisconsin voted Tony Evers (Ē-vers) the 46th governor of Wisconsin. Prior to his election, he served as the Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction winning statewide elections in 2009, 2013, and 2017.

To undo the good things done by Scott Walker.

DeSantis is right. DeSantis should also offer an alternative - "Florida Teachers for Better Education' - a private group...

Ron had me when he went to Brandon. FL to announce several anti-mandatory vax policies.

Can I mail my ballot to Brandon? I lived in FL for a couple of years in the ‘80s. I live in the stupid state of WA that’s filled with idiot Dems. (Barf Alert:) Patty Murray. Jay Inslee

“To undo the good things done by Scott Walker.”

Evers’ first win was the fault of Walker breaking the Archie Bunker rule and Dems cheating.

The Evers win this cycle was at least partly Trump’s fault. He did not want Walker’s pick - his old LT gov. Trump’s pick did poorly. Should have been an easy win. Ron Johnson broke the Archie rule too and still won this cycle statewide whereas Trump’s gov pick failed.

Add WI to the list of states skeptical of Trump’s help... PA, WI, GA, FL... No R can afford to lose all those states. He has some repair work to do next year or so.
