Electric heat is much more expensive, and heat pumps are impractical this far north. Single digit lows are not uncommon in upstate NY.

And the cold weather lasts longer
It isn’t the south where you get a cold snap for a few days and then a week of mild weather.
Central and northern NY gets cold and stays cold.
Can’t imagine what electric bills are going to be in someplace like Potsdam.
