Musk did not fire a bunch of engineers, that’s why Twitter will continue to fully function. He literally fired people involved in the censorship, which, horrifyingly, happened to be the biggest chunk of employees.

I lived and worked in Mountain View 1987 - 2000, and saw many of the changes taking place. I worked for GTE (possibly Sylvania while you were there), and the GTE campus was built on top of the plume of toxic chemicals flowing thru the groundwater from the old Intel chip plant In the N Whisman area, next to US 101.

I drove past the old Wagonwheel bar &n grill daily, where many of the deals that formed Silicon Valley were struck.

...dismissed two-thirds of employees with no apparent impact on the platform’s operations...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This really is remarkable, isn’t it?
A truly bold move that exposed some hard truth. It’s no wonder it got people’s attention.
Elon Musk hasn’t met a paradigm that he isn’t willing to shift.
It used to be a nice little nowhereville with mostly Moffett people and of course the chip factory workers.
Woman who lived next door to us saved up all her cookies working assembly at Fairchild on Ellis St, bought a duplex in the 70s...now worth > $2M. Ain’t no mo assembly workers doing that there....
It all changed in the mid 90s. Netscape started the ball rolling; their offices were on Middlefield. Then when Google was a new startup, they moved into the vacant SGI complex and the rest is history.
Crap houses that sold new for $20K in 1961 in the Cuesta Park neighborhood now sell for $3M, and they don’t look any different. Beyond hilarious. The people inside them DO look different then the original owners...cuz they “ain’t from these here parts” as the guy in the movie said.
Corner of San Antonio and El Camino is now a giant complex of four story modern buildings with shops and condos, mostly inhabited by Chinese. As in people FROM China. Used to be Sears.
So yeah...it’s different. It’s the global nexus of massive amounts of cash. Which is really weird for a place that is basically featureless built on fill dirt. If I had to do everything over again, I would have bought the smallest house in Baja Los Altos back in the 80s: they still sold for like $250-300K then. Expensive for then, but not like now: $3M and up. For the same places.
Cheep 2day! Move right in!
I survived over twenty years at Boeing Commercial airplane company. I left for a job at a Hawaiian observatory.
This is common practice at a company that is in business, Layoff the useless deadwood. You don’t keep them around. The purpose of a ethical business is to stay in business and make a profit for the owners. Only government can afford to offer “make work” jobs, and even then that can only go so far till the government kills the “goose laying the golden eggs”.
People need to do for themselves. I suggest reviving Homesteading. Federal government has too much land (illegally) as it is. 160 acres, some seeds, and a mule for the laid off
You know, after 40 years in aerospace, what I noticed is that the people who rapped about “deadwood” were the people who really were the only deadwood around.
Seems that they protected themselves by saying that and then producing sock puppet shows (er, PowerPoint presentations) detailing all the vapid non-things they were doing.
Companies that are run by similar vapid people - like Boeing under Harry Stonecipher - end up not utilizing everyone because the management is well...vapid.
They didn’t just do it here. They clearly stacked the deck in Brazil, and there is much, much more to be learned before they somehow immobilize Musk. who has kept his power level very well hidden.
///////
The left has pretty much 100% success rate at destroying people.
I don’t want Musk to be destroyed. He may well be the best hope for the USA. My prayer is that he understood well and prepared sufficiently for the onslaught that’s coming against him.
I believe a bunch of engineers were fired.
From what I have read, engineers were included in force reduction. Initially, computer engineers and programmers flooded into Twitter from the other Musk companies to examine things like code, security and employee productivity. Focus on productivity for example.
Change logs track when code is changed, what was changed, when the change was implemented, the size of the change and who authored the change. By looking at these kinds of metrics, an individual's productivity can be measured, rated against their peers and measured against outside standards.
Example for two coders/engineers…. Pointdexter averaged 1.5 implemented code changes per year with the most notable one was to change the format of banners used in the yoga rooms. Delbert averaged 10 implemented code changes per year with the most notable one reducing CPU time by 0.1 microseconds per unit processed. This reduced energy costs by $20M the first year.
One engineer fired in the initial round. The second retained by the new ownership pending further review.
This is another version of MicroSoft & IBM making OS2. When the developers from both companies got together, the IBM staff too pride in the number of lines of code they wrote while MS was bragging about reuse & brevity.
