The police chief of the college town where four University of Idaho students were slain last month has admitted that he was unaware that a neighbor reported seeing the door of their home wide open on the morning of the murders.
Moscow Police Chief James Frye appeared taken back when asked about an unnamed neighbor’s claim that the door wasn’t shut about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 13, the day Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, are believed to have been killed in the early hours.
“I’m not even sure where that came from, to be quite honest,” Frye told the Daily Mail on Thursday, adding that it was the first time he had heard anything about an open door.
The chief also said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.
“I don’t even know the answer to that one. If I did, I would probably comment on that but I don’t know the answer whether the door was open,” he told the outlet.

The police chief of this small college town quickly asked for assistance from the FBI major crimes unit as well as the Idaho State Police. I understand that the case is being aggressively investigated by a large number of LE professionals.
Most people suck at their job.
Surprise, surprise…
Hmmm… wonder if they even took fingerprints from this door. Yes, I know that others came there after the murders but before police came.
“The unnamed neighbor” of course the unknown sources with unsubstantiated crap. Well well, the knives are out on the Police for not solving these murders in hour or two. I would gather that every single neighbor in the area has been interviewed about that house and that night. The Police need to find out who that “The unnamed neighbor” is and who made the accusation. If that neighbor did not tell the Police they saw a door open when interviewed I would charge them with with withholding evidence.
No fan of LEO here, but you are 100% correct!
This was very possibly a predator who had no connection to the victims. That is the hardest case to solve. Generally, if they left no good evidence at the scene the only way to catch them is when they screw up on future acts.
Indeed.
The CSI TV shows have radically distorted just how much footwork goes into investigations, let alone multiple murders such as this.
It was nearing a holiday week with many students gone, even more getting away from it all as the news of the murders spread.
It is going take time assembling the pieces as every possible person who was a friend, acquaintance, classmate etcetera can be interviewed. Only then a profile of the perp(s) can be created.
The Moscow PD was prudent seeking outside help.
They’ll get the bad guy but for now self appointed ‘experts’, news media and so on needs to back off. No way that the authorities are showing their cards at this early stage.
Hearing that the FBI is involved doesn’t make me feel any better.
The only crimes they seem to “solve” these days are the ones they create.

The early reports of this crime said that the front door was open when the police first arrived. It was not stated whether the survivors had run out this door when they discovered the first victim, whether the friends who survivors called to the screen used the front door and left it open, or what. The conventional wisdom now is that the survivors exited via the open glass slider by the kitchen. I don’t blame the Chief for not retaining every shifting claim and detail—he’s not the actual investigator.
Agreed.
BARNIE get in here................
Lab results will maybe help (unknown DNA profile they can test against) but the scene was a blood bath so it’s going to take a while. As you said, the general public, watching shows like CSI, have a very distorted view of what it takes to work through evidence in a case like this ... 4 victims, a house that was used for parties & is going to be loaded with fingerprints & DNA that is not the perps.
As for the families, they want this solved yesterday. Their expectations of the LEOs are unreasonable, but they come by them honestly. For their sakes, I hope the LEOs get a break. The community is alarmed & they should be - there are a lot of nutcases, evil people, etc out there, but they are not ‘capable’ of killing. This perp WAS capable ... not just one, but four & in brutal fashion. The police need to find this person & I believe they are doing their best under the circumstances.
Speaking very broadly, maybe overly so, keep in mind that the FBI has both criminal investigative and counter-intelligence missions. Since 9/11 in particular, much of the mission focus, funding and political emphasis has been given to the counter-intel/counter-terrorism side of the house. This is where a lot of the abuses have germinated and blossomed.
The criminal investigations side, IMHO, despite their relegation to the backwaters, has retained some of the professionalism and competence for which the FBI was once highly regarded. Are there exceptions to that? Yes, probably quite a few, but on balance, I have to believe they're providing quality assistance in this case, if nothing else, resources the Moscow PD would never have access to.
They need to hire private investigators, if they haven’t already.
The FBI is far too corrupt to trust with this. If it turned out to be a person they have been grooming for some other act or have some other covert connection to, they would work to cover it up. Just like they did in Colorado, Orlando, etc.
To me, this states the neighbor told police about the door, but the Chief was unaware of that specific detail among the thousands of other details they've been dealing with.
If half of the reports are correct, these investigators are bumbling idiots.
I agree that if the killer has no connection to the victims, it will be nearly impossible to catch them. But this crime was stupid and may indicate this is one of their first murders. If that’s the case, hopefully they left some DNA.
