Pontiacs....

What a story.

Nobody tried all that with the new 1964 Renault Dauphine I had. Not even for use in lemon advertisements.

Example, the heater totally had to be replaced. Waiting time about 2 months to get from France (”we don’t stock any foreign car parts”). Today’s equivalent cost of just the main part in $535. Next was a hole that blew out in the ceramic body of one spark plug. Mechanic had never heard of that position of blow out. And special lube for steering every 6 months or it sounded like a rusty rail car on a siding and took a weightlifter to steer until it froze up totally again. In cold Michigan weather I had to put a blanket on the rear engine every night or wait for spring for it to thaw out.

Later went on to Pontiacs made in the USA.

I remember seeing a few of those Dauphines on the road. Even though they got good gas mileage they broke down so often most gas guzzling Yank Tanks were cheaper to drive. Years later at the 1971 NY Auto Show at the old Coliseum Renault had some R8s on display, one with the Goridini performance package. They were an improvement but didn’t sell too well here.
