Remembering Pearl Harbor 81 Years Later
https://youtu.be/T_L0kWTqPiA ^ | Self

Posted on 12/07/2022 6:41:05 AM PST by j.havenfarm

My friend Lou Conter was on the deck of the USS Arizona when the Japanese attacked on December 7. Today he’s one of two remaining survivors of the Arizona. I’m please to report he’s still well at 101. I visited him a few weeks ago, and will see this great man again this weekend.

Since 2017 I’ve posted here each year my son’s 2017 Eagle Scout Project video biography of Mr Conter. In honor of him and all those who fell, and those who lived to fight on to victory, I present it again now. https://youtu.be/T_L0kWTqPiA

You did fine.

Thanks for posting. I was wondering when someone was going to post on December 7th’s history (I couldn’t make up my mind what to post).

For those that care, the “google doodle” does not recognize the significance of the day.

To my late Uncle Bill, Army Air Corp mechanic, Wheeler Field.

My Uncle Bill had wanted to be a pilot but got his knee shot out that morning and spent quite a long period recovering.

He ended up becoming a combat engineer in Patton’s Third Army. He was wounded again evacuating St. Vith during The Battle of The Bulge but made it home.

Wow, one of the very few that got to sample both German and Japanese heavy metal. God Bless your uncle’s memory. Most would not have kept serving after a debilitating injury like that.

Dad of a friend in high school sacked groceries at the local IGA. Had no idea until after he died that he served as a B-24 nose gunner flying out of North Africa. He never, ever talked about it.

And of course, Google’s daily “doodle” or whatever they call it, makes no reference to Pearl Harbor Day. Instead, it is about “Seasonal Holidays 2022”. Can’t mention Christmas or anything, either.

A hot headed working companion was in the Navy and visiting the memorial back around 1969.
A Japanese couple visiting asked him where the Arizona was. He went over to the edge of the memorial and pointed down...

‘RIGHT THERE WHERE YOU PUT IT YOU M**********RS!”

I was there in 1969 and saw lots of Japanese fighter bombers flying around as they were filming the movie TORA TORA TORA at that time.
It is weird to go by the airport and see lots of Japanese fighters coming in for a landing.

I would highly recommend visiting the memorial. Arrive early, as its large visitor center is generally filled with people whenever it and the memorial are open.

I’ve seen this before, thanks for posting it every year. Just curious - What’s your son doing these days?

The youngest participant of the Pearl Harbor invasion would be 99 years old.

The youngest World War II veteran would be 94. I just found this from a website promoting a Word War II museum.

“according to US Department of Veterans Affairs statistics, 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2022.”

This website also has a graphic listing the number of living veterans by state.

God bless that man. The B -24 was a dog of an aircraft really.

With the wing configuration one good hit in either wing and down it went.

I knew some men who flew in B- 17’s and they all said they owed their lives to fact they were flying in one.

The B- 17 could take punishment that would have destroyed a Liberator.
