Long-delayed plans to fix maintenance platforms and put up stainless steel mesh nets on both sides of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge are still far from completion, at a skyrocketing cost of nearly $400 million, according to recent court filings.
In 2018, contractors Shimmick Construction Company and Danny’s Construction Company, referred to as SDJV in court filings, were supposed to begin work updating decades-old maintenance and inspection platforms, replacing handrails and adding wind fairing as well as suicide deterrence nets to the bridge. But they say the project as it was originally drawn up by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (referred to as the "District" in court filings) was flawed, and that the district "concealed significant information ... including extensive bridge deterioration that interfered with SDJV's ability to perform the work as designed by the District."
As a result, SDJV alleges that the costs for the project have skyrocketed from an original estimate of $142 million to at least $398 million, and they've blown past the original January 2021 completion deadline for the suicide deterrence nets.
More than 1,800 suicide deaths have been recorded at the Golden Gate Bridge to date.

Be sure you walk out on the correct side of the bridge.
Nothing sadder than the poor slobs who jump off the side which doesn’t face the city.
1800 suicide deaths in 86 year = 21 suicides/year, likely of which 95% ultimately would successfully commit suicide via another venue.
POSSIBLY preventing 1 suicide/yr at a cost of $4oo,ooo,ooo.....pricey.
Put up diving boards.
How many drug overdoses during this time?
Years ago, the Wall Street Journal ran weekly columns about curious things in the country.
One was a column about a lumber yard on the north end of the bridge.
Seems workers would spot people walking over the bridge and take bets whether they were jumpers or not.
Yes, something to think about. Suicides are very sad, but, if they can’t jump off a bridge, would they simply do it a different way?
So what if someone jumps to the net, crawls to the edge, then jumps again? Then what? And what happens when bums want to use them for a hammock?
Since the Left so hates humanity, this makes me wonder why they want to spend so much money to prevent suicides?
Is the money being spent to prevent suicides or is it a way to get funds for long overdue maintenance?
Hell of a lot better view on top of Half Dome in Yosemite.
Or install dispensers on each end of the bridge filled with loaded liberty pistols to help pay for the nets
.
BINGO!
So - million$s spent - for no reason, and to no effect at all.
Looks cheap, like a good wind could rip that right out of there.
I worked projects bidding to contractors in the Bay Area for 21 years, including many with many reputable and well known companies like Schimmick. I never hear of “Danny’s Construction company”. sounds pretty iffy to me.
Ah yes. Because a suicidal person could never figure out how to just climb outside the net and jump. People want to make an impression jumping off that bridge, and they will.
Oh, there will be effects: Contractors will be able to buy new Lambos, yachts, and ski chalets. Buncha Dem politicians likewise, on the bribe money. There will be multiple TikTok challenges to see who can do the best video of a double reverse gainer dive onto the net.....
And it will end uo 5x the original cost since all the Democrat snakes will run up the cost with graft and corruption.
