China may have ‘passed the point of no return’ as Covid infections soar
CNBC ^

BEIJING — Surging Covid infections across mainland China make it harder for the government to achieve zero-Covid without reverting to a harsh lockdown, Macquarie’s Chief China Economist Larry Hu said.

In the last few days, the daily case count has climbed to around or more than 28,000 — near levels seen in April during a stringent lockdown in Shanghai, according to CNBC calculations of Wind Information data. The figures showed the last time mainland China saw only a handful of daily infections was in June, shortly after Shanghai eased its restrictions.

The latest Covid wave has hit the southern city of Guangzhou, the capital city of Beijing and many central parts of China — prompting local officials to tighten restrictions on business and social activity this month.

“China might have already passed the point of no return, as it’s unlikely to achieve zero Covid again without another Shanghai-style hard lockdown,” Hu said in a report Tuesday. “What policymakers could do now is to slow the spread of virus, i.e. flatten the curve, by tightening the Covid controls for the time being.”

China's continued destructive practice of "zero covid" policies really does counter the idea that the virus was created as a Chinese bioweapon. They're destroying their economy even as the rest of the world has moved on from covid scares. Very strange behavior.

(i.e. flatten the curve)

I’ve been told it will take two weeks

Is cases a useful metric at this point?

I read that COVID is basically a non-issue in Africa now since Africans did not have the resources (or perhaps they just had the good sense) regarding societal lockdowns. I wonder how COVID can be so debilitating for China and not for other areas of the world.

“Very strange behavior.”

There’s that very nagging feeling they know something we don’t. Or they are the quintessential “inscrutable Orientals.”

Nope, doesn’t counter. “We” don’t know the full plan.

Also has the desired affect of keeping the proles conditioned to being controlled and obedient to the government and authorities. That trumps everything in commie world.

Very strange behavior.

The Chinese behavior is not about controlling COVID (which at this point is pretty much impossible). It is about destroying political opponents in regions where there are simply too many of them with too much popular support.

The "Zero COVID" policy gives authorities the rationalization to effectively destroy cities and perhaps entire provinces if they get out of line. It also keeps their population continuously in terror of infections and more likely to obey the authorities.

Guess the ChiComms will have to continue welding shut the doors to peoples’ apartments to keep them from intermingling with others.

That’s why the worries of them being a rival to us is a folly. They are groundhogs, scared of their shadows. They have killed their youths futures with lockdowns.

This is more about political unrest than about Covid!

I wonder how COVID can be so debilitating for China and not for other areas of the world.

It probably is not so debilitating by now.

The original prototype, accidently released from the Wuhan labs was believed to be extremely lethal. It supposedly caused 100% fatalities in experimental lab animals - and in the first half-dozen or so of the research technicians who were infected.

The Chinese bureaucrats were absolutely terrified at first. Then they attempted various CYA diversions. We know this from communications intercepts and mid-level defections.

We seem to have gotten lucky in that COVID mutated very quickly into less lethal variants. This is the normal evolution of plague agents since forever. It continues to this very day.

But a terrorized population is more likely to be an obedient population. The Chinese seem to have their own versions of "Never let a crisis go to waste".

How many Africans live to the age of 70? Even if you make it that far, you are more likely to be durable.

In the West, we are old and sickly. Prime candidates for covid.

Delta variant was pretty lethal. One million Americans dead. But not really a big deal because it didn't kill the young and the healthy unlike the Spanish flu. We saved some money by not paying Social Security.
