The city council of Los Angeles, once a hub of the American oil industry, voted 10-0 on Tuesday to instruct the city attorney to prepare an ordinance that would ban oil drilling within a city that is still dotted with pumpjacks.
The Los Angeles Daily News reported:
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a similar ordinance earlier in October. The City Council in January unanimously approved a series of recommendations aimed at banning new oil and gas wells. The draft ordinance would phase out all such oil and gas extraction activities by immediately banning new oil and gas extraction and ceasing existing operations within 20 years.
… Many community groups have lobbied Los Angeles to stop oil drilling, citing the harm it has on communities, which is disproportionately felt in working-class communities and communities of color. More than 500,000 Los Angeles County residents live within a half-mile of an active oil well.
… [Council President Paul] Krekorian responded to concerns over a potential loss of jobs and an increase in gas prices. He said less than 1% of crude oil processed in Southern California refineries actually comes from wells in Los Angeles, and the loss of oil drilling will not impact gas prices locally. On jobs, Krekorian said he believes the era of oil and gas is ending regardless.

Oil is a natural resource, basically organic. Nothing artificial!
Be nice if oil companies immediately close all gas stations in all of LA.
It would be nice, but corporations are too woke to do something the right would love to see.
I'd definitely rather live near an oil well than near a windfarm. I lean toward Thomas Gold's theory that oil is a renewable resource that comes from deep within the earth - nothing to do with fossils.
There are lots of oil wells pumping 24/7 in LA right now. Many are actually in buildings so that you can not see them.
There was so much oil in the LA area that it was leaking out of the ground. The La Prea Tar Pits is an example of this.
I doubt the Brandon administration would want to drill for oil and operate refineries. I just can’t see them doing it.

Amazing how these oil wells know how to not harm the rich white residents of L.A.
Excellent point, Butcher. I was surprised to learn there are productive oil derricks all over Los Angeles, even dotted in residential areas. Nowadays they’re often camouflaged, as you point out. (My dad used to call Polish carpenters “wood butchers.”)
Of course this is a seizure of privately owned real property and shall be compensated under law.
This should be fun to watch as developers lose their shirts and sue LA after reading the fine print of their contracts.
