GOP seizes on voter hesitancy to attack EVs as costly to US

WASHINGTON (AP) — Heading into next week’s midterm elections, many Republican candidates are seeking to capitalize on voters’ concerns about inflation by vilifying a key component of President Joe Biden’s climate agenda: electric vehicles.

On social media, in political ads and at campaign rallies, Republicans say Democrats’ push for battery-powered transportation will leave Americans broke, stranded on the road and even in the dark. Many of the attack lines are not true — the auto industry itself has largely embraced a shift to EVs, for instance, and some Republican lawmakers are quick to cheer the opening of EV battery plants in the U.S. that promise new jobs.

But political analysts say the GOP messaging exploits voter hesitancy on EVs that may have put Democrats on the defensive at a time when Americans are especially feeling a financial pinch. EVs cost $65,000 on average, a fact GOP candidates cite.

More than two-thirds of Americans say they are unlikely to purchase an electric vehicle in the next three years, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Democrats are twice as likely to say they plan to purchase one as Republicans, 37% to 16%, respectively.

“There’s still lots of selling to do before EVs catch on with the American people,” said Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist and longtime staffer to the late Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. He described early Democratic messaging suggesting that EVs were an immediate solution to rising gasoline prices as a mistake. “That creates an opening for Republicans in this election, which begins and ends with the economy and inflation.”

I’m convinced one of the main reasons for the rush to electric cars is to price as many people as possible out of owning any car at all.

And why is this? Because an electric motor car has fewer parts, is actually easier to assemble and test, takes fewer workers to assemble, they can mark up the price and improve their profits, and they dont have to concern themselves with the lack of infrastructure or where the electricity comes from for the consumer.

Oh, puh-leeze!
Many of the attack lines are not true — the auto industry itself has largely embraced a shift to EVs...
There is ONLY ONE REASON that the industry has "largely embraced a shift to EVs" and there is ONLY ONE REAON that oil companies will never build another refinery...The GD federal government has coerced them, has driven the bogus global warming crap, has forced finance companies to abandon financing anything remotely related to fossil energy. It is most assuredly NOT market forces.

I got three sentences into the article and could not stand any more of the shallow AP propaganda by the government-run "free press."

AP wrote "attack lines are not true" -- yeah, I depend on some flunky hack J-School writer to adjudicate technical and economic truth for me. Never in a million years.

There was an interesting article (IIRC, it was from AP) in our Saturday or Sunday local newspaper.

The gist of it was that, many landlords and apartment complex management teams were NOT providing charging access for tenants needing to charge up their EVs. The article went on to suggest that maybe some legislation would be appropriate, to assure all renters have easy access for charging up.

How long until (at least in CA) we start seeing laws to this effect?

Ah, journalists. They cannot understand how the unwashed masses cannot see the economic benefits of spending an extra $30-$40 kilobucks for a car that'll allow them to save around $10k or so on gas, followed by an additional $30k or so cost for replacement batters in a few years (if those batteries are available at all). They should be glad that journalism low-T, Low IQ box top degrees were available to those to whom anything besides simple addition & subtraction were akin to manifold calculus (yes, there is such a thing).

Well the Dems are viciously attacking Musk (who's Tesla controls close to 70% in 2021 of the US EV market) even more.
Bet the AP are not eager to talk about all that.

“There’s still lots of selling to do before EVs catch on with the American people” said Jim Manley, a Democratic strategist

There they go again. Just improve "the message" and people will eventually bite. If only they could get their message out more persuasively. If only they owned more of the media in the country, they could get their message out.

It's never about engineering and economic truth. No, it's always that the stupid Bible-Toting Deplorables, Clingers, Chumps, Dregs and Smelly People reject what the Dems are selling. Just sell harder and people will bite.

"Republicans pounce"

Typical media bias. For example, the conservative view on abortion or any social issue is always the "divisive" position, a "wedge issue," but it is never "divisive" when Democrats talk about social issues.

Many landlords can't and never will. How many cables could you run from a multi-story apartment building to around the corner for cars parked at the curb? Cars parked across the street?

Let the city set up curbside chargers for the homeless to vandalize.
