Natural gas may be cheaper, but my utility company (Duke) charges not only for your usage, but adds an additional $40 each month just “to have” their natural gas service.
I have them “turn off” my natural gas (since only used for heating) from spring until Fall. I just had them “turn it on” last week again. So stupid to pay $240 for 6 months of NOT using it at all.
And they’ll still bill me the $17 to “turn it on” again, even though it was never actually disconnected other than a phone call in the spring when they quit charging me for it.
Since Covid they quit coming to the house in person twice a year to actually disconnect it or turn it back on (charging $17 to turn it back on) - so I still have the natural gas there at any time I want to use it - but once I start using it they start adding that additional $40.
I wish they’d get rid of that charge. It makes no sense other than for them to make more money.
Here in Alabama it's $11/month flat fee for natural gas, before charging for usage. For power it's $15.60/month flat fee (they tell you it's $14.50, but they add a 50¢ rider on top of that to make it $15, then add a 4% state tax to make it $15.60). So if you have both power and natural gas it's $26.60/month even if you don't use their services.
For me it's just $15.60/month (before paying for what I pull from the grid) because I converted my natural gas appliances to electric a year ago. I did that so that the sky high cost of natural gas doesn't impact our family's finances directly.
