In the context of his day Columbus was a very moral man. Columbus Day and his canonization was an effort to make Italians feel more accepted in American culture. You have to strain HARD to delegitimize this great man.

Just to clarify: Columbus was never canonized. There is a movement to canonize both him and Isabella, which was headed for a while by the founder of my Alma Mater, Dr. Warren Carroll, but it hasn't happened yet.
