The White House is urging governors to take similar action. Administration officials told reporters the move could benefit about 6,500 people, though they noted there are far more people who have been convicted under state law.

Nobody is currently in federal prison on a simple possession charge, officials said.

So he is essentially doing nothing

Vote buying.

What’s the point of having a LAW if the president is just going to waive it away whenever he needs to score political points?

We’re not talking one or a few but THOUSANDS.

And does the next GOP President get to pardon all non-violent federal gun charges?

If not, why not?

How many of these convictions were in California when Kamala was AG?

I would rather see something to the effect of if a person has no criminal record, except Marijuana possession they are given a pardon and those records expunged.

There are tons of otherwise employable people out there that can never get jobs due to a record.

And, also, there are MANY that have become barred from all 2A as prohibited persons due to a simple MJ conviction possibly from their teen years.

I was wondering about that. I’m no libertarian pot-head, but I’ve long believed that at least 95% of the Federal criminal code should be abolished.

That’s basically what this is. It only pardons the possession.

It has no impact on other felony convictions.

Well, I think people can get their records expunged based on this, so that is probably something to a lot of people with a stupid pot charge holding them back in life.

I have to ask why. Are there Federal jobs that can’t be filled if you have a conviction? IRS agents? How do you even get the feds to charge you with simple possession?

Like it or not, the Constitution gives very broad pardon powers to the President, who is essentially the chief law enforcement officer in the nation. If we don’t like how it is used we are going to have to figure out how to get an amendment passed to change that.

I also don’t think anyone has been incarcerated on just a simple marijuana possession charge in many years

Can’t own a firearm for one thing. Can’t vote in many states still. And you may be able to get a lot of government jobs, but you may have trouble with some security clearances I would think.
