Oh, give over. We all know that Putin’s the KGB nostalgia vote, and Navalny’s the useful ethnonationalist pin-up. He’s kept around and allowed to say his piece from time to time, just like court jesters of old.
His funny imprisonment’s another brilliant bit of Kremlin PR - even when he’s in solitary confinement in the furthest harshest gulag he’s still smiling and blogging.
Sends a strong message - ethnonationalism and dissent is okay by Putin as long as he knows you’re not going to challenge the status quo and the elites.
Plenty who are far less openly critical than Putin seem to suffer from from accidentallytrippedoutofawindow-itis. It’s because he thinks they’re up to something.
Moral of the story - if you’re a useful critic, you may be kept around on Putin’s terms, but the minute he thinks you’re too much trouble you’re toast.
