The British government bought all privately owned slaves in their territories and freed them.

For an idea as to how expensive that was, they finally paid off the debt in 2015. Not a typo.

Expensive but cost less then the way we did it, with a war.

The British paid reparations to slave owners for their emancipated slaves.

American slave owners never received any reparations.
