Can the Ukrainians sustain two simultaneous counteroffensives against the vaunted Russian military? A few months ago, that may have seemed impossible. Just a couple of weeks ago, most observers considered either the Kharkiv or Kherson offensives a feint to distract from the other.
Now that Ukraine’s Kharkiv campaign has achieved so much success, however, it’s clear that their Kherson campaign was no feint. Their forces, apparently using US-supplied HIMARS artillery, took aim at a meeting of occupation leadership in the heart of the city, and apparently hit a bulls-eye. Even Russian state-run news outlet RIA Novosti reported on the success, via Newsweek:
A video published by Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti shows a huge plume of smoke rising from the building of the Kherson regional administration. Another video shows extensive damage to Kherson’s district court building.
Kherson has been under Russian control since the beginning of March. However, Ukraine is waging a counteroffensive in the region, and has had success in another counterattack in the Kharkiv area in the northeast of the country.
Ekaterina Gubareva, the deputy head of the Russian-installed administration in Kherson, said that at the time of the strike, a meeting was underway between the heads of the city and municipal districts.
She called the attack “a vile act of terrorism” and said the head of the labor department was injured, and her driver died.
Ukraine struck its occupied Kherson region at least five times on Friday using U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), causing a huge explosion at a building where officials of the Russian-installed administration were holding a meeting, authorities said.

That is definitely going to win Ukraine hearts and minds.
Interesting to watch this unfold. It could be that Russian defenses are collapsing, allowing the Ukrainians to advance much more easily than expected. Or, it could be that the Russians are letting them advance until they outrun their logistics, at which point, they counter-attack. Given the ham-handedness of the Russian invasion to this point, I kind of doubt it’s the latter.
What will—the failure to protect territory gained, or success in regaining territory lost?
Mastriano is down 5 points in Pennsylvania, and here you are pushing Biden’s war, while urging more US taxpayer money to Ukraine. What’s wrong with you?
You are drinking cool aid right now. The Ukrainians advanced in the single location over a 800 mile front which was of low priority for the Russians and also Ulrainians managed to overwhelm defenders by a factor of ten. Everywhere else they had their butts handed to them.
Using HIMARS against civilian targets is not a sign of winning.
I always wondered why people left Hitler take all Europe and kill 20 millions. Why they let Stalin kill 50 millions, why they left Mao kill 100 millions? Pol Pot killed 1/4 of the population.
Whole countries where whipped out, genocides, terror, hunger.
Well, now I know!
If just Mastriano was down by only 4 points, nothing like that would ever happened!
Yes, killing the invaders most certainly raises the morale of the people caught in occupied territory.
How does watching these Ukrainians welcoming the troops of the counteroffensive near Kharkiv make you feel?
Do you think these people want to be in Russia?
BobL opines often in these threads, but he had no comment when I showed him this video.
Odd, isn't it?
The Russians are in extreme difficulties. There is very little supplies getting to them (all the bridges and rail lines are cut); they depend on that infrastructure and were trained to fight with massed artillery - no trainloads of shells means they cannot fight as they are trained. It is only the missile strikes on the Inhoults River dams which burst, making resupply of UA troops somewhat difficult - a last ditch desperation maneuver by the Russians.
The only reason the Russians are holding onto the northern and eastern part of the Kherson Bridgehead is the 2 divisions of spirited and motivated airborne - the 92nd and the 7th, with the few remaining 22nd sfB. Without at least one of those, that section would have fallen long ago.
The western portion around Kherson city will fall once the current supplies are diminished and they are encircled or forced to retreat, leaving all their heavy equipment and, probably since they can only leave on foot, a lot of POWs.
Who run Bartertown?
Your sour grapes are delicious
(yet another indication that Russia keeps losing)

“Now that Ukraine’s Kharkiv campaign has achieved so much success”?
Success?
What Ukraine did was throw it’s most capable and well armed troops, that NATO had been preparing for months, into a small area of the front. Now Zel has excuse to beg for more billions when he heads an upcoming MIC conference with arms producers.
As another person said:
‘The Ukrainian offensive failed miserably everywhere the Russians had choosen to defend. The only success was the area where the Ukrainians managed to put ten to one numerical advantage against the Russian rear troops and rebels. The idea was to encircle and take them prisoners which didn’t work. Not a lot of the defeat and victory respectively.’

How many of the killed are occupiers? They all seems like locals to me.
your infantile denialism is amusing
you’re the 2022 version of Baghdad Bob

Neocons support whichever party supports their agenda, which is why they don’t line up with most FReepers.
Calm down. The Cold war is over, Putin isn’t going to invade Arizona and Biden should not be trusted on the matter of war, or any anything else. Focus your attention on the midterms, and turn off Fox news.
The thing is, too, that that could easily be some American rural community, the differences in society and culture being so slight.
You attacking Norse Viking personally instead of providing a retort to his actual comments and proving he is wrong point by point (which should be easy if you are correct) is sour grapes on your part.
Bwahahahahaha!
The Ukrainians have retaken more territory since September 6th than the Russians seized since April.
