HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A month after losing one nearly $50 million verdict, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is set to go on trial a second time for calling the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting a hoax and causing several of the victims’ families emotional and psychological harm.
A six-member jury with several alternates in Connecticut will begin hearing evidence Tuesday on how much Jones should pay the families, since he already has been found liable for damages to them. The trial is expected to last about four weeks.
Last month, a Texas jury ordered Jones to pay $49.3 million to the parents of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis, one of 26 students and teachers killed in the 2012 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Jones’ lawyer has said an appeal is planned.
The Connecticut case has the potential for a larger award because it involves three lawsuits — which have been consolidated — that were filed by 15 plaintiffs, including the relatives of eight of the victims and a former FBI agent who responded to the school shooting.
Jones, who runs his web show and Infowars brand in Austin, Texas, also faces a third trial over the hoax conspiracy in another pending lawsuit by Sandy Hook parents in Texas.

Whatever you think of him this is lawfare on a scale rarely seen...
He should just not show up...he’s gonna lose no matter what. This is a classic East German show trial.
3 trials? Unbelievable isn’t it
Did Alex Jones believe that the information he was giving was false? I haven’t been following the story, so I don’t know. I thought in a liable case you had to prove that the journalist knew what he was saying was false, and was saying it to try to cause damage?
Or is the standard different in different cases depending upon who the defendant is?

Pretty common ly seen as the left persecute Trump and anyone associated with him. The Jan 6th people can attest to that. Their lives are ruined now.
This is ridiculous ... why should Alex have to pay money to someone who is annoyed by Alex’s comments? Maybe some medical bills if it can be proven that they were a direct result of the commentary *and* it can be proven that the medical care was actually needed and not invoked to perpetrate fraud.
OK they have destroyed the man financially and now they try to get blood from a stone. You can bet the ant-gun lobby is paying the attorneys.
Umm...1st amendment? Or...is the Constitution truly dead?
I guess the first amendment doesn’t include speech that might offend someone. I didn’t know that.
By calling Sandy Hook a hoax, he has implied that all the parents were liars and actors. He hasn’t libelled them by naming them, but it looks like that’s how it is being interpreted legally.
Does anyone remember the US Constitution? It was really cool.

My guess is this situation will put a huge damper on freedom of speech. He’s being made an example. Many Conservatives will fear lawsuits of any sort before they speak out on anything. Fear is a powerful force.
It’s another step to Totalitarianism.
I have little use for Alex Jones but in the country where I was born people used to be able to speak their minds, however empty or misinformed it was.
Jones seems to be being held responsible for the actions of people who listened to him. Unless you can. See a case for incitement I don’t see fault here.
Exactly. It is government intimidation of freedom of speech.
“implied” is the key subjective word
He needs to hire his own court stenographer, which is his right. That would strangle all the shenanigans pulled by the first judge.
They have admitted publicly that the only goal is to silence him.
You know nothing about him other than what the propaganda press has told you and you think that makes you highly intelligent.
You are the poster child for the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Over the past seven years of broadcasting at least fifteen hours a week, he spent 40 minutes on Sandy Hook.
The use of “trial” in the headline is misleading. The trial is over and, predictably, Jones was found guilty. These subsequent courtroom meetings are to squabble over how much money he owes the greedy “victims.”
