I saw something on the History Channel a long time ago about the English Longbow.
As I said it was the Javelin missile of it's day.
Apparently the yew tree is strong and flexible at the same time.
There was a British guy, a former SAS( I think he said he was) demonstrated how incredibly powerful the bow was, and accurate. He held the bow by the shaft which was very rigid but the two ends were tapered thinner and when this guy, who was stocky and well built pulled the draw string until the two ends of the bow were almost touching. The arrow he shot , maybe a hundreds took off in a blur, went through the bulls eye archery target and into a tree what was behind it. The guy said a hundred archers with Longbows could literally ''make it rains arrows''.

When I read that about the longbowmen remains I was surprised too!
You see a lot of resistance band strength equipment now. The claim is its more effective than free weights. Maybe the developers of that equipment are taking a page out of the longbowman training manual?
I wonder how the English longbow stacks up against the Japanese Samurai longbow?
You know, I had to look up “Combat!”. That is pretty old.
My wife likes the British crime dramas. I’ve found where I can download a lot of old TV on the web and watch series like “Men into Space” or shows I grew up with. We have all of Perry Mason, too. It’s kind of funny watching them, now, when you know more about the actors you’re watching - like what a poofter the guy who played Burger was, or how Winky disappeared from “Rocky Jones” once he went to jail.
My parents are older than you and I have had to give up trying to interest them in Free Republic. I think it requires too much for them to be interested, so it’s great that you can make use of it. They still want something like FOX used to be, where they were happy to be told what they want to hear.
I hope you keep on trucking. Someone has got to climb out of the wreckage.
My wife and I enjoy “Perry Mason’’. I remember as a kid my mother always watched that show. It had a long run, several seasons. And the British crime dramas are excellent. We like Helen Mirren in "Prime Suspect''. What I like, and to be honest wistful, is seeing things I remember as a kid in the America I once knew.
The big cars, pay phones, women with those beehive hair do's and high heels and ‘’Paul Drake(William Hopper) smoking everywhere! In Masons office, in the hallways of the court houses.
“Combat’’ is pretty the show I watch, although my wife sometimes will tune in.
I never missed an episode of that show.
“Vic Morrow as “SGT. Saunders’’. Rick Jason as “Lt. Hanely’’ and “Checkmate King 2 this is White Rook, over’’.
Sadly though Morrow was killed in that filming accident he was doing for George Lucas.
And a few years ago, after a reunion of the surviving cast members of "Combat'' Jason committed suicide.

Good question. The Mongols were excellent archers. Riding on small but stocky and fast steppe ponies they used a bow that was small but they were made strong and compact for a rider and as you pointed out about resistance technology the pull/resistance factor and a short but thick arrow made the Mongols fearsome.
The combination of a small but sturdy bow with resistance technology made for an arrow that ,well not exactly so, but was almost as fast as a bullet.
