Kherson is a Ukrainian city. Retaking it for Ukraine is the objective and the advantage is in denying it to the invaders.
Taking the Kherson region denies the Orcs access to Odessa, gives Ukraine access to the Black Sea and keeps their grain flowing. Its one small step to retaking the Crimea; threatens Orc military bases in Crimea and the Kersh Bridge, gives them access to the head gate of the Crimea’s fresh water supply.
They can clear the West Bank of the Dineper from the Kakhovka Dam to the Black Sea. They can liberate a large occupied city. It also pushes the Russians further away from Odessa.
Also the somewhat isolated location allows the Ukrainians to test their offensive capabilities (logistics, troops, equipment, and commanders) in an area where they have some give if things go wrong.
