“Russia has been playing this game for months and now it seems to have reached its inevitable outcome.”

Funny, I thought it was Europe attempting to ‘sanction’ Russia.

There are stupid arrogant people in governments of the world. If they were smarter they might be building skyscrapers, changing skylines, developing golf courses and hotels...but no...these self-appointed geniuses think they’re qualified to run the world because they’re bureaucrats.

Actually, one could argue that the German strategy on natural gas was VERY SMART - they had a VERY CHEAP and very reliable source of gas and could still have it today - whereas US LNG would have to be purchased on the spot market, after bidding against China and all other countries that wanted it. With their very cheap and reliable gas, Germany became possibly the wealthiest non-energy-rich country in the world.

Obviously where it went off the rails was when Germany let the Neocons run their foreign policy and told them to ‘punish’ Russia for liberating* Ukraine, where Germany and most of Europe was in NO POSITION to do such.

*I use the term ‘liberating’ to tweak the Neocons...reminds them of their Communist past

“...Siemens also said there were additional turbines available that could be used to keep the pipeline operating.”

5 of them, all in Canada, due to ‘sanctions’.

They didn’t merely not listen.

They laughed at him.

I wonder if they are laughing now.

Putin is one smart cookie.

I know how easy it is to be labeled a Putin sympathizer here on FR if you don’t knee jerk condemn every move Putin makes, but he’s got his country in a better place than the democrats have us. Especially biden/obama.

Germany will get what it can from the International black market. Re-sellers are abundant these days.

I don’t think Putin ever thought of this as a Game ....bad choice of words by the writer. Hardwiring countries to oil lines is costly and timely. But Russia being oil rich it was Russia’s ideal way of trade.

Russia has been playing this game for months

Hint #1: it's not a game.
I'm only surprised it's been open this long; I'd taken that as an indication that the door was open to some sort of dialogue.

Which will be the first EU country to peel away from the EU sanctions and make a separate deal with Russia?

How long until the next one does, and then how long until Germany and Brussels stand alone and shivering?

Should we start a pool?

Europe and their sanctions, extremely hypocritical, just like Joebama. China is buying up Russian NLG and quietly selling it back to Europe.

So Europe is back to buying Russian gas, only it is now using China as an expensive middleman instead of buying it directly from Russia (helping Russia skirt sanctions). Europe is apparently willing to pay two to three times more in order to keep this virtue signal blazing.

“Putin has pulled the gas supply lever as far as he can. It hasn’t worked”

Epic Fail.

Putin cut the gas supply to zero, and the markets yawned today. Prices dropped in response.

Bottom line: Europe has now prepared.

Putin has played his energy card to the max, and lost. He does not have another anywhere near as strong.

European pain is temporary, Russian loss of market share is likely much longer term.

The loss of that revenue is catastrophic for the Russian economy and Government finance. Europe was 85% of Russia’s gas exports last year, and natural gas was 1/4 of total Russian GDP. They still have their domestic market, the 15% in the Far East (Japan and China), and the Turkstream pipeline is still operating, but the others are flaring their gas into the atmosphere.

The goose that laid the golden eggs is dead. Putin did that.

“Which will be the first EU country to peel away from the EU sanctions and make a separate deal with Russia?”

The speculation is Bulgaria. But nonetheless, the infrastructure will continue being built. “At Tesla speed” for alternative supplies to Bulgaria (new LNG port capacity in Greece, financing already sunk), so return to Russian supplies would likely only be to the degree of the EUs former orderly phase out plan for Russian gas, before Russia cut off the gas on their end.

Europe is not going back to long term dependence on Russian gas - that bridge is burnt. Maybe Russia can salvage 10% of the European market, once the war is over.
