Japan defense chief says world has entered 'a new era of crisis'

The international community has entered “a new era of crisis,” Japan’s recently installed defense chief said Monday, pointing to a drastic need for Tokyo to rethink its security approach amid growing threats from China, Russia and North Korea.

“The international community as a whole has entered the most trying time since the end of the previous war, and the existing order is being seriously challenged,” Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said Monday in an interview. “We believe that we are entering a new era of crisis.”

Pacifist Japan has found itself in a precarious security position, with China’s massive military buildup advancing, North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs continuing to grow, and Russia’s bloody war in Ukraine offering lessons in the fragility of the status quo.

But Hamada — who was tapped to take over the defense portfolio earlier this month in a Cabinet reshuffle — is expected to play a key role in shepherding through some of the biggest changes in Japanese defense policy in nearly a decade in response to these challenges.

The 66-year-old, who was defense chief between 2008 and 2009 in the administration of then-Prime Minister Taro Aso, will be spearheading discussions on revising the National Security Strategy and other key security documents by the year’s end.

On Monday, he reiterated what has become a common refrain in the administration of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, saying that all options for boosting Japan’s security would be on the table in discussions on revising the NSS.

Considering the tense security situation, “we will not exclude any options and will consider all realistically as we formulate a new National Security Strategy toward the end of the year that fundamentally strengthens our defense capabilities within five years,” Hamada said.

If it means that the wealthy Asian nations will finally take over responsibility for their own defense, then it is a very good sign.

Japan should not trust or rely on the United States.

Yes, it is because of a stolen election. Not because Joe Biden is in office, but because our system of government has failed.

We have failed to be able to correct or bring to justice those that stole the election.

The world stands witness to our internal corruption that day after day we fail to root out, day after day we fail to stop the political persecution, day after day we fail to remove our own evil.

We can blame the democrats/progressives/joe biden. But our system has failed. Whether we care to realize it or not.

I have no idea why any country would trust us or rely on us.

People should reflect that times were quiet overseas when Trump was President. All of our enemies have become emboldened since Biden moved into the Oval Office… especially after we surrendered Afghanistan.

Wait until our enemy’s sleeper cells here in America are activated.

We’re sitting ducks.

The one and only thing Japan can trust in is an independent nuclear retaliatory capability. A Japanese finger on an independent Japanese bomb is the only thing that will deter China.

I’ll say it again, Trump being deposed was a tragedy for America, a catastrophe for the rest of the world.
