Why should this be covered by the tax payers?
Exactly. If something like this gets established in the U.S., the money will come from increased taxation and/or printing more inflationary money. The general public will pay, one way or the other, including those of us who had enough sense not to take the jab. This sounds rather familiar (cough — student loans — cough).
