Some people in the West were dazzled by the ideological clothing with which the Soviets dressed up traditional Russian Imperialism but fundamentally nothing has changed from the Czars to Stalin to Putin – Russian rulers see it as their mission to expand the zone of Russian territory and Russian controlled puppet states as far as possible.
Similarly, Putin dresses up his imperial ambitions as fighting for the white race (but somehow simultaneously fighting against Nazism) and against globohomoism but same thing – it’s just a costume he wears to fool gullible people in the West.
Putin just spent the last 20 years beating it into ordinary Russians that they should stay as far away from “politics” as possible and leave the ruling to Putin, using both the carrot and the stick. You just go about your business and leave the politics to us and things will be great for you. You’ll be able to afford that package tour to Europe and that new smartphone. If OTOH you try to mess with politics, well bad things could happen to you and your family. You might be poisoned or set to prison on trumped up charges. For the most part, this succeeded extremely well – basically you had to be nuts to try to oppose the regime. Most sane people got the message and chose the easy life. If it really bothered you, well it was not like the old days. You could just get on a plane any day of the week and move to Latvia or Georgia. People even learned to love Big Brother who was advertised every day on the TV like toothpaste – new improved Putin, now with more macho!
Well, the chickens have now come home to roost. Maybe Putin at one time actually did care for ordinary Russians and not just for his gang, but as he has gotten closer to old age and death he started worrying about his place in the history books (he had more billions than he could ever spend in his remaining years – there was no point in stealing any more money at this stage in life). No one will remember the tens of thousands of Private Oseyev’s killed in the assault on Kiev, but they will put Tsar Putin right next to Peter the Great.

Maybe Private Oseyev’s family now wishes that they had gotten involved in “politics” earlier (the Putin thugs could beat up a few individuals but could they have beaten millions? – Solzhenitsyn had the same thought) but it’s too late now.
I liked Pink Floyd back in the day and listened to a lot of Waters’ albums, but the human being Roger Waters, the front man, is one terribly mixed up guy, and if he gets it right, it’s usually by accident. But one hell of a musician, I’ll give him that.

There was a time that interviewers would do their homework ahead of time and be prepared for the topics being discussed.
Nowadays they only memorize the DNC talking points and just crumble under the slightest deviation from the party line.
Ukraine & Russia represent two factions of the left, and the Ukraine war is a proxy war between these factions.

Russia and Germany were going to carve up Europe. We saved the UK from the Nazi’s, not Russia.
If we had not joined the war and gone into Africa in 1942, the UK would have fallen by ‘44 and Nazi’s would have had the the bomb by ‘46 and would have had missiles to deliver the bomb to Moscow by ‘47. Commies in the US never would have had the chance to give Russians the bomb before they were Nuked.
The Russians Saved Berlin from getting Nuked by us, but other than that, they didn’t save anybody in Europe from anything. We saved them from getting Nuked by the Nazis.
It seems most of the responses here are from folks who support Ukraine. IMO Ukraine is responsible solely for being invaded. Russia is a great power and views Ukraine in NATO as an existential threat. It matters not what any other country believes. Might makes right. When the USA went to war with Spain over some flimsy excuse, might made right. And when the 5th leader of some relatively weak country (called the United States of America) told the rest of the world powers to stay out of the Western Hemisphere, exactly where did President Monroe derive his authority to do so?
As far as Ukraine they have been waging their own private small scale war of oppression against ethnic Russians in the eastern part of Ukraine for some years. And secondly, saying you want to join NATO is a non-starter for Russia. You can ignore this fact all you want. You can argue Russia doesn’t have the right to do this. But nobody can say Ukraine didn’t know what Russia told them they could or could not do in regards to joining NATO.
Ukraine was a country of 44 million people. 12 million have been displaced and 5 million of those are living outside Ukraine. The president of Ukraine says he wants all of the lost territory restored. This includes not only donbass and luhansk, but crimea as well. Fat chance as far as I see it. Russia has all of the Donbass, and a good portion of Luhansk. And why on earth would they give back Crimea unless forced to? And who’s going to force them? Russia will absorb a good portion of eastern Ukraine when this war is over. And imo that’s the best case scenario for Ukraine.
And if that best case arises, what will be the cost. How many millions of Ukrainians will now become Russian citizens, how many Ukrainians living abroad will decide not to return? Donbass and Luhansk will likely give Russia 3 million citizens. And how many more Ukrainians will be trapped as Russia continues to advance this year? I can see a scenario where Ukraine loses 8-10 million of it’s population in a best case scenario. From losing it’s citizens to Russia directly or to those citizens who do not wish to return home.
If you are in the west and hate russia perhaps you can smile and say good. At least we killed tens of thousands of Russians and made them pay a heavy cost in lost equipment and showed the power of western weapons. But for Ukraine, this is a disaster. Only a fool would have pushed the bear to do this. And that fool is Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Not sure I see eye to eye with Roger Waters, but unlike the interviewer, he at least seemed to be using his brain.
Dude is spot on about NATO causing the ear in the Ukraine by moving arms right next to Russia. . What whould the United States do if China pushed nuclear arms into Mexico?
