A study that investigated the placement of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) temperature stations found that 96 percent of the facilities used to measure heat failed to meet the agency’s own “uncorrupted placement” standards.
Research for the study shows the 96 percent corruption is because the stations’ measurements are tainted by the effects of urbanization – or heat produced because of their close proximity to asphalt, machinery, and other heat-producing, heat-trapping, or heat-accentuating objects.
The Heartland Institute compiled the report using satellite and in-person surveys of NOAA weather stations that contribute to the “official” land temperatures in the United States.
“With a 96 percent warm-bias in U.S. temperature measurements, it is impossible to use any statistical methods to derive an accurate climate trend for the U.S.” Heartland Institute Senior Fellow Anthony Watts, who directed the study, said is the study announcement distributed to the press. “Data from the stations that have not been corrupted by faulty placement show a rate of warming in the United States reduced by almost half compared to all stations.”
“NOAA’s ‘Requirements and Standards for [National Weather Service] Climate Observations‘ instructs that temperature data instruments must be “over level terrain (earth or sod) typical of the area around the station and at least 100 feet from any extensive concrete or paved surface,’” the press release said. “And that ‘all attempts will be made to avoid areas where rough terrain or air drainage are proven to result in non-representative temperature data.’

I’m guessing they’ll just relax the standards. After all, Climate Change is “settled science”. We can’t let pesky little things like measurement failures unsettle the science.
There's a USCRN (Climate Reference Network) of stations without all the problems mentioned in the Heartland report. You will never see the government (e.g. EPA) display those temperatures even though they collect then. Here's one snap a couple of years old: 
It has not gotten warmer, no trend, no warming 2005 to date.

I still remember an article that had photos of these in bad places for readings. Ome was on a rooftop next to a heating vent.
One thing that has happened is that when a lot of the weather monitoring stations were built, they were placed correctly, out in the open, the correct distance from other objects, etc.
As urban sprawl happened, that changed the environmental conditions and created heat islands with more buildings and that interferes with accurate temperature and precipitation measurements.
It is not necessarily faulty equipment or incorrect placement by the NWS. It’s urbanization.
These manipulated temperature records are the entire “Data Proof” basis for the “Climate Change” communist take over, including Green Energy, no oil drilling, solar, windmills, etc.
All they have besides that is their own computer models.
Kick down the temperature data set and the entire house of communist cards collapses.
They have nothing else. There entire “Carbon Bad!!!” justification is based on manipulated temperature records.

And the common sense thing that I notice a 1-2 temperature rise every time I drive back into the metro area I live from the country might mean something ?

Look at where a tone of these things are: airports. Major ones. Between vast uninterrupted swaths of concrete and tarmac, constant jet exhaust, and zero cover they're the hottest places you can imagine in any given region.
This is like the water company and electric company not reading the meters but guessing the amount and always up from last month.... : )

Only 100 feet from concrete or paving?
One only needs a second grade education to know that’s laughable.
A station should probably be 5 miles away from a urban area to not be affected by large amounts of buildings with asphalt roofs and roads, etc.
OF COURSE increased urbanization happening around temperature measuring stations will make higher temperatures be measured .
Roofs and highways collect heat.
A second grader could figure this out
