No loyal American will believe them. Given that we haven't declared war against either belligerent, why should an American's loyalty to their country be called into question if they happen to believe the Russian Ministry of Defense's take on a particular event over that of, say, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense?

Lol, I was just thinking “what I’m disloyal to the USA if I believe some of what Russia is saying?”.
Last time I looked we were not in a state of war with Russia.

"Given that we haven't declared war against either belligerent,..."
That's beside the point. Members of the Russian government have threatened or implied threats to nuke us several times. They're fomenting generalized hatred against Americans through their government controlled media with falsehoods. They've tried to interfere with U.S. elections (the filthy Russian accusations against Donald Trump in the "dossier" being only one case in point). They hate our freedoms. Their are many other reasons.
"...why should an American's loyalty to their country be called into question if they happen to believe the Russian Ministry of Defense's take on a particular event over that of, say, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense?"
Russian propaganda is not only false; it's moronic.

The Russians project their “denazification” propaganda from an American action in the past.
Denazification, cumulative review. Report, 1 April 1947-30 April 1948.

And we didn’t continue to occupy Germany or Japan. Those countries were only invaded and temporarily occupied as part of a war for our existence. The Russians intend to keep the real estate that they take. They celebrate conquering other countries to loot and enslave. When the Soviet Union dissolved, we could have easily occupied Russia and did not.
So Russia has no excuse for invading Ukraine.

Ukraine is already less corrupt than Russia, but Ukraine continues to improve government against corruption. It’s been an ongoing effort for years.

I’ve been called a Ukie and a Putin puffer here. We have no dog in this fight. I say “a plague on both your houses”.
