History has shown that ANY country that trusts Russia / USSR is in for bad things
maybe this will finally teach the Euros not to trust Russia anymore, and get their gas from more reliable sources elsewhere

In turn, it was prudent to trust the Russians instead of pussing them off. Five eyes probably said them that Russia is going to collapse by now and give away free gas as reparations. There was no plan in case if this not going to work.
