KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Friday’s shocking assassination of Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in one of the world’s safest country stunned the world and drew condemnation, with Iran calling it an “act of terrorism” and Spain slamming the “cowardly attack.”

(snip)

“We are shocked and saddened to hear about the violent attack against former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” the White House said in a statement. “We are closely monitoring the reports and keeping our thoughts with his family and the people of Japan.”

(snip)

Other former world leaders also condemned the appalling attack on Abe, who was the longest serving prime minister in Japan. He led Japan from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 before stepping down in 2020 due to poor health.

Sampling of leaders' and former leaders' comments from around the world in the article. Many of the comments came before the leaders knew Abe had died.

What I despise is this worship of “leaders”

Sorry, but their lives are no more important than a citizen in Chicago.

This is not a greater tragedy. It is a lost innocent life.

Yeah it’s horrific.

No one should have this happen, of course, but to see it happen to someone who seems as nice of a person (my opinion) as Abe seems to be makes it only worse.

I really liked him and his wife.

I think after Hinkley/Reagan security started getting a lot tighter for US presidents. Probably time for Japan (and the rest of the world) to do the same for candidates and officeholders.

This attack reminds me of the near-fatal stabbing of candidate Bolsanaro a few years back in Brazil. Just nuts.

A fair comment

Just goes to show how tragic all loss of life is, especially life dramatically taken away as in this case

Our “leaders” (who are supposed to be our “representatives”) would do well to remember that this happened in a nation with harshly restrictive gun control laws.

Where there is a will there is a way. Most politicians are not very hard targets.

Has anyone awakened Joe yet, and fed him lines to say about this? Or is he in a drug-induced lid?

Do you know if the shooter used a black powder rifle or shotgun? Looks like black powder smoke to me. Modern propellant doesn’t make a cloud like that.

I understand your point. We do the very same with actors and sports figures. I think it is part of human nature to need someone to look up to.

A lot of smoke. Was it a black powder weapon?

I’m not sure the Deep State took him out, but I agree with his outlook on Ukraine.

Before you declare this to be “just one of those things” perhaps you should consider who did it and why.For example...if this was done by some Chinese,or North Korean, agent it could be very serious indeed.

Trump will definitely go to the Funeral. He was Trump’s closest ally in the G7.

I can’t see train wreck Biden going. Harris will be a slap in the face to Japan.

The media spin will be wild.

“Trump will definitely go to the Funeral.”

That’s what I’m thinking, and his Alaska rally will put him relatively close by.
