ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - Something is going on with some third-party energy suppliers. Those are companies that compete with RGE and NYSEG.

Businesses and homeowners got two letters in two weeks detailing serious financial issues that might delay the bill this month.

The first letter told customers the company has to cancel fixed-rate contracts because they don't they're going out of business.

The second letter that, to people in Brighton, Canandaigua and Victor, said customers are going back to RGE because their third-party supplier is in "default."

Trying hard to dance around the fact that the now defunct "Source" alternative energy was just that...wind and solar.

The first letter told customers the company has to cancel fixed-rate contracts because they don’t they’re going out of business.

Mighty fine writing, Tex...

Can they be sued for breaching the contract?

As any landlord in NYS knows; you can sue and go to court, get a judgment but odds are you won’t see any money.

Several of my friends here in S TX are landowners who signed “iron clad” contracts with the wind generator companies. Had the contracts looked at by lawyers, yep, iron clad. As soon as the wind farm was complete, it was sold to a new owner (standard practice). Payments cut way back. So much for iron clad. Minor maintenance, no problem. More expensive repairs the turbines are abandoned. There is a wind farm south of Big Spring. Only 3 out of 10 is still operating. Landowners get paid for the working turbines (averages $0.01 per rpm). Now they have nice ornaments cluttering the land. The new wind farms near me, less than 3 years old, 1 out of 10 still operating. Read it costs $2,200 per KWH to product electricity.

As an owner (and the designer) of a well-engineered and properly sized RESIDENTIAL solar system (that includes a big battery), I can tell you RESIDENTIAL solar works, and has proven to be a good investment, especially with the just announced 12% increase (from GA power). We beat the rate increases by a year, and enjoyed the big Federal ITC. Timing can be everything to hit an ROI.

Utility scale solar operated by the power companies only helps them. It’s just another way to generate power they can sell, WHEN the sun is hitting the panels.

Wind power is a scam.

I will dispute any statement that well designed RESIDENTIAL solar with batteries doesn’t work.

It depends on the area. In North Alabama, the power company only pays a pittance on the power you sell them.

This is not news to Upstaters.

There have been issues with ESCOs all along.

Albany has known and doesn’t care.

Follow the money.

Back in 2916 and 2017 the Village Voice did a series of articles on ESCOs.

If folks get a chance, they should look them up.

None of this is new news.

“I will dispute any statement that well designed RESIDENTIAL solar with batteries doesn’t work.”

No argument here on that statement, we are in the process of doing the same, backed up by propane. I too think RESIDENTIAL solar could and will be the common in the future. Whenever that is.

To me the interesting part about the “new green energy” is we are hearing & seeing the same debates heard 130 years ago between Edison & Tesla. AC or DC?
In my opinon, to make “new green energy” work on a commercial scale you would need a “power plant” every 10 blocks or so. Just as Edison did in the 1880s.

BTW, if folks the crap with ESCOs is bad, you should see what’s going on with land banks in NYS...

(hint, hint...)

It’s a nice long contract and it’s ALL SMALL PRINT.

The small print was approved by Albany.

The buck stops there.

Renewable would make great sense done on a household basis, but that’s not what Albany and Deep State are insisting upon, is it?

And climate change policy is as much about saving the planet as CoupFlu policy is about protecting public health.

True only to a point.
1. A 26% discount helped the timeliness of the ROI, not the overall ROI going positive. No question. We all benefit from all tax deductions and credits, given eligibility. We made ourselves eligible. We had to SPEND $$$ to get $$, so it wasn’t free money.
2. The steady stream of rate increases has helped it more as it turns out, because we generate 65-70% of our power at current rates (we could cut back if needed, but we can be profligate consumers now) at a flat rate, net, of about 12 cents per kWH, with no peak rate charges. ‘Forever’ essentially.
3. We will always have power in the event of grid issues. Absent a HEMP event, that is. No direct ROI on that. It is high value risk mitigation given where we live (rural).
4. It’s really convenient to be able to run the AC as much as we want on those hot sunny GA summer days, for ‘free’ and still export net power for the day. That export is worth only pennies, but operating the house at zero operating cost is a legit bonus. The battery runs it at night.
5. We’re realistic about it. We buy power in the cold dark winterish weeks. No biggee. If push came to shove, we could reduce consumption and ‘live’ only on solar during the worst dreary February here.
6. We speak from experience. You can’t tell me with legitimacy that RESIDENTIAL solar doesn’t work.

There’s a big solar farm in a nearby Town...but it ALL goes in the grid...the Town gets “0”. I suppose tax money rules...but you know the people rarely get anything to their benefit.

What did you pay upfront. It wasn’t free...and how much of a subsidy did you get...Wanna know because WE paid for it.

Alabama is a RESIDENTIAL solar-unfriendly state. No question.

Never justify going solar on the internet lie about selling power back. That math DOES NOT WORK. In the southeast Southern Companies pays you wholesale rates. It costs you more (amortization of solar) than the maybe 4 cents per kWh you’ll get.

Cost-avoidance, convenience and resilience are the drivers of ROI, not this BS of selling power back.

When we retire, we’ll be able to afford our utility bills. Will you? FJB.

FYI, we have 500 gallons of backup as well 😉

Propane vs diesel? Propane NEVER goes bad.
