AP — JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A team searching a Mississippi courthouse basement for evidence about the lynching of Black teenager Emmett Till has found the unserved warrant charging a white woman in his 1955 kidnapping, and relatives of the victim want authorities to finally arrest her nearly 70 years later.
A warrant for the arrest of Carolyn Bryant Donham — identified as “Mrs. Roy Bryant” on the document — was discovered last week by searchers inside a file folder that had been placed in a box, Leflore County Circuit Clerk Elmus Stockstill told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Documents are kept inside boxes by decade, he said, but there was nothing else to indicate where the warrant, dated Aug. 29, 1955, might have been.
“They narrowed it down between the ’50s and ’60s and got lucky,” said Stockstill, who certified the warrant as genuine.
The search group included members of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation and two Till relatives: cousin Deborah Watts, head of the foundation; and her daughter, Teri Watts. Relatives want authorities to use the warrant to arrest Donham, who at the time of the slaying was married to one of two white men tried and acquitted just weeks after Till was abducted from a relative’s home, killed and dumped into a river.
“Serve it and charge her,” Teri Watts told the AP in an interview.
Keith Beauchamp, whose documentary film “The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till” preceded a renewed Justice Department probe that ended without charges in 2007, was also part of the search. He said there’s enough new evidence to prosecute Donham.

“He said there’s enough new evidence to prosecute Donham.”
Now...where have we heard that recently?
I say to arrest her.
Lemme see ifin I gots this straight...
This group searches old files and finds an arrest warrant...
Our illustrious doj does an investigation and finds nothing..
Yeah, sounds about right
I wonder how many witnesses from 1955 are still alive let alone be willing to testify?
AFAIK, there is no time limit on murder......................
Emmett Till is pretty much the first Black Lives Matter. They’ve gotten a hell of a lot of mileage from the death of a black kid in 1955.
Sure, sure, sure. Every life is precious. But Emmett Till wasn’t really all that important. He’s just politically useful and I choose not to play that game.

Justice Department Closes Emmett Till Investigation Without Charges

“In a news release dated Dec. 6, federal officials said there was not enough evidence to pursue charges in the case, which was reopened after a historian claimed in a book that Carolyn Bryant Donham, the central witness whose account of an encounter with Emmett led to his death, had recanted the most salacious portions of her story — that he had grabbed her and made sexually suggestive remarks.
Citing the statute of limitations and Ms. Donham’s denial that she had ever changed her story, the Justice Department said it could not move forward with prosecuting her for perjury.”
“...and relatives of the victim want authorities to finally arrest her nearly 70 years later.”
Is she still alive? Sentient? I doubt it. She is too close for her main judgment for it to matter.
I just saw a headline where half of murders are never solved.
They need a new show trial. This is as good as any. 🤣
With so many current tragedies, and murderers released and roaming our streets, right now! Why is this long ago case even remotely important? Any protagonist still alive will be dealing with the ultimate judge in short order.
What is the warrant for, specifically, since the charge would define statute of limitations.
70-yrs ago? Roughly 90-yrs old today. Does she even recall anything?
I say to arrest her.
Post 12.
Even if she does she can fake it.......................
There is no sculpture of limitations on murder
It is not “playing that game”
Arrest her and charge her.
Looks like they tied her to the “kidnapping”. Heck, she may have been in the car with her boyfriend, while he and another friend or three bot the kid into the car.
And they may have not bothered with her because they got and convicted the perps that actually took him to a spot and hung him - after dropping her off at home.
I’m not saying that is what happened, but we really don’t know anything. We only know that it was for being part of the “kidnapping”. That is, there when it happened.
that is a stupid comment
