I grew up near an abandoned Nike missile base. It was out in the woods, in the middle of nowhere. Unless you were with some people, creepy as hell. It was the place to go and party as a teen.
“It was out in the woods, in the middle of nowhere.”
I can believe it.
Winter 1979 I was visiting a friend whose family had a condo in Burlington, VT. We skied in the day and worked at the ski resort restaurant at night. We’d walk home after closing around 1am. It’d take 30+ minutes and we’d cut across large field/forest areas to save time. So one night, it’s dead still, very cold out and we’re walking thru the woods. About a foot of snow with a hard crust on top. Up ahead there was a light in the woods at ground level. We crept up to it. It was about 8’ square area pushed up over the snow. It must have come up 16” or so as the snow was about 8-10” deep because there was about a 6” gap from the bottom of the ‘roof’ to the snow. We crept up and heard two guys talking and smelled cigarette smoke. We couldn’t make out what they were saying. We listened for a few minutes then crept away. It was late, we were tired and not wanting any issues. This was at least 2000 feet from the nearest road with no structure or anything nearby. Nothing. Just in the middle of the woods.
I always wrote it off as some missile control center as it was a large valley in a sparsely populated area.
