Former President Donald Trump has gone 1-for-2 in his endorsements of challengers to incumbent members of Congress from South Carolina.
Rep. Tom Rice, one of just 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Capitol riot, has been defeated in a GOP primary by a Trump-backed challenger.
According to a race call by The Associated Press, South Carolina state Rep. Russell Fry, who had Trump's endorsement, easily topped Rice, a five-term U.S. representative, giving Fry the 7th District's Republican nomination.
In the 1st District, meanwhile, GOP Rep. Nancy Mace bested her Trump-supported challenger, according to the AP. Fry easily defeats Rice
In South Carolina, a candidate needs to get more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff. At the time of the AP's race call, Fry had 51.1%. Rice was at 24.6%.
Rice had refused to back down to the tirades of a former president and from his conviction that Trump is to blame for the Capitol attack.
He told NPR in February, "If we're going to have a scenario where the president can try to intimidate Congress ... we might as well have a monarchy."
Rice even doubled down and said he regretted not voting to certify the presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. That angered many voters and inspired a slew of GOP candidates, including Fry, who wanted to take Rice down. The challengers said he had betrayed the conservative district and the former president.
Trump, meantime, has called the longtime congressman a "coward" and someone "no one trusts." He even gathered supporters in March for a rally in the district Rice represents to deliver a punishing speech and again endorse Fry.
In his campaign, Rice had reminded constituents he voted with Trump more than 90% of the time and helped the former president draft the 2017 GOP tax cut bill.
Fry will face Democrat Daryl Scott in November in the strongly Republican 7th.
Mace wins in the 1st District
Mace, on the other hand, defeated former Rep. Katie Arrington outright in the 1st Congressional District Republican primary. Trump had endorsed Arrington.
At the time of the AP's race call, Mace was above the runoff threshold, at 53%.
Mace angered Trump by criticizing him in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — though she later walked back her critical comments and — unlike Rice — didn't vote to impeach him.
Mace, the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, had the backing of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a onetime U.N. ambassador in Trump's administration.
She'll next face Annie Andrews, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Well no one is going to get 100%
If Trump’s choice wins? — “endorsements don’t make a difference”.
If Trump’s choice loses? — “huge setback for Trump. No one likes him.”
If Trump gets a split decision? — “huge setback for Trump. No one likes him.”
Mace walked back her remarks to save her skin.
Rice doubled down and got “Fryed”.
What did she say?
how did the biden supported candidates do?
She started out blaming President Trump for January 6th reading off Liz Cheney’s script.
For the election this year she said how much she agreed with President Trump, loved his policies while saying there was an awful thing happening at the Capitol on January 6th.
Talked out of both sides of her mouth to win the usual politicians way.
In Primaries, I bet 99%+. Liberals are mindless sheep, they vote for the establishment candidate they are told to vote for.
Rice is cooked.
does anyone have a way to know if primary voters “crossed over” from Dem just to vote in the GOP primary against Trump backed candidates?
Trump is so gracious in defeat and congratulated Mace and wished her well. Mitch would start working on getting the Dem in. Trump needs to do that in some cases. Maybe the S.C girl isn’t the right one but Cheney and Murkowski need to go no matter the cost. I better not see Trump backing off if they get passed a primary.
I just hope that Trump gets a Congress that makes it worth his return to the White House.
As pointed out in the article, Mace did not vote to impeach Trump. Unlike Cheney and Kinzinger, she refused to sit on the Jan. 6 committee. She criticized Trump about Jan.6 but that’s as far as it went, and she later reversed herself and walked back her comments.
Trump has been our second greatest President behind Reagan, but right off the bat, he just goes full blast furnace on anyone who disagrees with him about anything.
I’m old, old, old, but I’ll pass this on. In college I had a professor who worked as an aide to Lyndon Johnson when Johnson was Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate. Johnson seldom ranted and raved and threatened anyone in public. He invited them to a private meeting and once the door was closed he he went full Hiroshima on their butt. When the door opened he was smiling and slapping them on the back. He got what he wanted, but he tried not to humilate publcily and most were willing to work with him later on. It’s that talk softly/big stick thing. Trump needs to learn how to do it.
And someone should ask this little greaseturd what we have when the politburo, I mean, Senators and Congressmen are out right intimidating Supreme Court justices?
Mace and Lindsay are two peas out of the same pod. They become Mace 2.0 and Lindsay 2.0 when they need Trump’s blessing, then revert back to 1.0 when the heat is off.
I am no spring chicken either. Times have changed. Lyndon Johnson got by with his system of lying and cheating in Texas politics but only lasted one term as President of this Republic. Donald Trump has a huge following because he loudly hollers back at the communist democrats and their Deep State fellow travelers. Conservative Republicans cringed at the George Bush version of fighting for pro American interests and against anything destructive to America. He wore a KICK ME sign on his back and the communist democrats and their media obliged him on a daily basis. A non shy Donald Trump is exactly what this country needs if this Republic is to survive.
And doing that exact thing to Brian Kemp over reopening Georgia “too early” might have been enough by itself to cost him the entire election.
Social or business enemies can sometimes be defeated with such blasts - but political enemies seldom are - and they persist forever.
Lindsey Graham proved that you can pretend to be Conservative during election season, and the SC voters will buy it.
Depending on the balance of power in Washington, I’d seriously consider voting for the Democrat for one term in order to get rid of a RINO.
A Pelosi is probably worse than a McCain, but it might be worth putting up with a Pelosi for a term in order to permanently replace a McCain.
The Lame Stream Media will be trumpeting the Mace win as “Trump choices being crushed”.
