The perp here, if he is eventually caught, needs some punishment he will not be likely to forget, especially since it was apparently attempted murder. Maybe the answer is two forms of punishment. One could be imprisonment for a long term, but maybe that could be augmented with something of a more physical punishment.....something not soon forgotten, like a caning.
