Clearly you believe Americans are just basically the same people they were fifty years ago. In reality a very large segment are either morally compromised, cowardly, vicious, communistic, or perverted. There are no answers to our current depraved state short of real mass violence followed by a Franco style government for a long time.
Personally, I think a much more effective form of gun control would be to subject each and every school administrator, counselor and teach an elementary school child is influenced by to a complete background check.

I bought a .22 awhile back, and filled out a form to be sent to the FBI. It informed me on the form that if I am not Hunter Biden, it would be a felony to lie.
How, exactly, can that be expanded on?

Hold the family responsible for the actions of crazies — that’s how it used to be. If a family thinks their relative is nuts, put the nut in a loony bin for observation. How many nuts have driven over people with cars? How many have beat people with a shovel? Fix the crazy problem directly, and you don’t have to involve shovels, cars, or guns.
