This same school board COULD allow teachers to carry firearms, if they wished to do so. They have not. They are also to blame for the tragedy. Oddly, I have seen no mention of this, anywhere.
I have no idea how many school districts in Texas allow teachers to concealed carry but I hope more of them will, after this. It’s probably more common in small, isolated schools where NO law enforcement may be readily available in case of an active shooter. There are lots more where it might take 15 minutes or more to get more than a couple of officers on scene and upwards of 30 minutes to get a SWAT team.
School superintendents and local law enforcement should take the lead in pushing their school boards to implement these programs. Schools where this is done require training and approval before teachers are allowed to carry. I don’t know if non-teachers can participate but they should. A secretary, custodian, or lunch lady may have the first and best opportunity to stop a shooter.
