GOP primary race for Alabama Senate seat turns bitter

AUBURN, Ala. -- Alabama’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby has become a bitter high-dollar contest with the three strongest contenders jockeying for the nomination.

The leading candidates are U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks who won — and then lost — former President Donald Trump’s backing in the race; Katie Boyd Britt, the former leader of Business Council of Alabama and Shelby’s former chief of staff; and Mike Durant, an aerospace company owner best known as the helicopter pilot whose capture during a U.S. military mission in Somalia was chronicled in the “Black Hawk Down" book and subsequent movie.

Lillie Boddie, Karla M. Dupriest and Jake Schafer are also seeking the GOP nomination.

Observers say it’s hard to predict whether the nomination will be settled in Tuesday’s primary. The fractured field increases the chances that the race will go to a June 21 runoff, which is required unless one candidate captures more than 50% of Tuesday's vote. David Mowery, an Alabama-based political consultant said the race has an up-for-grabs feel.

There will likely be a runoff, and despite Mo Brooks losing Trump's endorsement, I hope he can pull it out and be the nominee, because he'll then win in November.

Katie Boyd Britt will be another Kelly Loeffler, Cindy Hyde Smith, or Shelley Moore Capito, in other words, a McConnell schill, trained by Richard Shelby (former Democrat).

Katie is the best choice. I talked to her and listen to her speak. She is the real deal and she is stated uniquely that the election was rigged. She is also a mom and has skin in the game to save the country. IMO on the other hand said everyone needs to get over the rigged election, so I am over him. He thinks he can work within the corruption to make things better, Katie said to me personally it must all be exposed and is backing a call to have the 2020 election audited. My vote is for Katie.

Mo Brooks is still the best candidate. Trump unendorsed Brooks because he was pivoting away from the stolen election in 2020. Trump had no problem endorsing Romney (who paid Trump back by impeaching him). It makes me sick to see Trump endorsing so many treacherous RINO’s (i.e. Oz in Pennsylvania).

I’m beginning to think DeSantis would be a far better candidate in 2024.

Trump dropped Mo because Mo sunk in the poles because Mo ran away from saying the truth…that the election was rigged. Everyone knows the election was rigged, but Mo wanted to be acceptable to Mitch. Katie is and was steady and unequivocal.

Part of Trump's big feud with Brian Kemp in Georgia is because Kemp defied him and ended the lockdown and reopened the state early on in 2020, while Trump cried at him over his doing it.

People need to not let Trump's personal biases stop them from supporting the best candidate in these GOP primaries, be it Brooks or Kemp or not-Oz. About the only incumbent Republican who Trump is railing against I really wish to see lose is Liz Cheney.

I heard Mo Brooks interviewed on the radio in Alabama in 2015 just trashing candidate Donald Trump up and down. He is a hateful person whom few really know.

Bingo. Katy seems like a nice lady, but what are her true bone fides? Nada.

************

The objective should be to withhold support from all RINOs. Trump needs to remember that the GOP will work hard to flip newly arrived reps and senators into RINOs once they get to DC thereby strengthening the resistance against him. Knock down as many as you can, while you can.

Lisa 'Murky' Murkowski must go.

Ditto Raffensperger in GA and numerous RINO state legislaures, SOS, and AGs who turned a blind eye to the Steal and did everything to prevent any meaningful investigation of it.

This is all crap.

First, Alabama is very red. Any of the potential nominees will win.

Brooks wiki looks suspiciously hardcore conservative. Suspicious because he’s been in Washington too long to trust him Draining The Swamp.

He is the only one who has given a reason for President Trump withdrawing endorsement. The reason is unconfirmed.

Pick the most firespitting, zero political experience candidate (No Swamp smell) and squeaky clean nominee. That seat won’t be lost because it is so red. None of the options are foolish Roy Moore types.

Two election cycles. That’s what it will take. We can get 4 senate seats in the best-case scenario. That will leave some wiggle room for those that play games with the party. It also means keeping our heads on straight in the next 2 years. There’s Tester, Sherrod Brown, and Mancin. Mancin will be 74 years old. No 50-50 seat ‘power’.

Then there’s the tougher nuts to crack. Az., Nv., Casey in Penn..

Could a ‘24 wave threaten Baldwin in Wisconsin or Stabenow in Michigan. Fix the voting rolls? Then there’s Virginia. A term limited Gov. 3 years into his one term. Would he take on that Dr. Suess-like fella? Promote the Lt. Gov? The key would be to get the top-tiers to step up. Our experience suggests our leaders are afraid of a fight.

It’s not crap. Yes, the Republican will win but will they be a RINO or will they be conservative.

According to the American Conservative Union Foundation rankings Mo Brooks voted conservative 97% of the time in 2021 and 93% of the time in 2020. Richard Shelby, who is the Katy Brit endorser/funder, voted conservative 76% of the time in 2021 and 78% of the time in 2020. That’s not who Alabama needs to send to the Senate. Shelby also voted to fund the vaccine mandates. Just stupid.

I can almost guarantee that’s who Britt will be as well. She’s not going to be in-your-face fighting like Brooks will.

Durant - who the hell knows. I just don’t trust him.

For full disclosure I know Mo Brooks and he has done a great job in Congress. He doesn’t bring the “pork” home like Shelby but to me that’s a positive.

Also, McConnell is spending $2 million to defeat Brooks. That should be all you need to know.

Stupid headline. EVERY primary race is “bitter.” If you aren’t fighting hard for a seat, you really don’t want it.

That is NOT what the Trump/Kemp feud is mainly about.

Trumped dropped his endorsement of Mo Brooks when Brooks began tanking in the polls. Trump hates endorsing losers, and it was starting to become obvious that Brooks is a loser if you ever saw one.

ACU ratings evaluate someone according to an incorrect definition of Conservative.

Conservative is NOT lower taxes, more defense spending and lower government spending.

Conservative is Build the Wall, Drain the Swamp, America First in All Things, Pro Life and Pro 2nd Amendment.

You don’t get to cherry pick the last two and announce you’re conservative. If you’re not all 5, you’re probably from the Swamp. Better a Democrat than the Swamp. Lessons must be taught.

We know, you’ve told us repeatedly, yet she has no record of standing up against the people she works for. Britt’s just another RINO establishment hack and Dick Shelby’s meatpuppet. All talk of being “Conservative” when running, and then running back to the anti-Conservative wing once elected.

Go Mo ! Take down the RINOs !

You are so far off base it isn’t even funny

Trump hates Kemp and the Rats for very obvious failure to deal with voter fraud in Georgia

McConnell is fiercely opposed to Brooks, as he was in 2017. That tells you all you need to know.
