No one really remembers the Second World War anymore. That is the problem. That is the reason no one is taking it all that seriously.
The catastrophic loss of life, the ruined families, the deprivation of all kinds as everything went to the war effort . . . the tears of joy and celebration when it was over, after the inconceivable horror of the possibility not winning . . .
I remember it. From older people mostly, but I remember VJ Day vividly.
And that was a “mere” conventional war.
People think it’s just a story on the TV news. Or an analysis in the New York Times. It’s not. It’s a nightmare to be avoided at almost any cost.
