Republican representative Alex Mooney said it was “insulting” to describe the Capitol insurrection on 6 January 2021 as a “domestic terrorist attack” and labelled it a “protest”.
“I think that’s insulting, it was a protest,” the lawmaker from West Virginia said in an interview with MetroNews’ “Talkline” on Thursday.
Mr Mooney was asked by the host why he did not support a bill in May last year to form an independent commission to investigate the riots.
The bill, which was to set up a “National Commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol complex, and for other purposes”, was passed through the House of Representatives in May 2021 but blocked in the Senate.
The text of the bill referred to the riot as a “domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol”.
House Democrats went on to establish a select committee to investigate the attack, almost six months after the riots left many injured and four dead.
“It was a protest, that’s what it was. A few people went in and the law should be implemented for those who broke it,” Mr Mooney said. “I do not think it was a domestic terrorist attack.”
The remarks were made by Mr Mooney during a joint interview he gave along with representative David McKinley, one of the 35 Republicans who voted to investigate the attack.
The two Republicans are set to face off each other on the 10 May primary for a new House district in the mountain state.

There couldn't be a clearer choice.
If you live in West Virginia, vote for Alex Mooney on Tuesday!
A mostly peaceful protest by Dem standards.
Nobody in the so-called “news” media called that terrorism.
McKinley has been shouting that he is a Bush League Republican/Assistant Democrat.
I hope the people in WV are listening.

What insurrection was that yahoo news?
Mooney, Mooney he’s my man. If he can’t do it no one can!
They should just include covid and all other forms of death everywhere, that way, they could say thousands died because of Jan 6th.
I agree it was a peaceful protest..right Psaki..oh wait, they were wearing maga hats, obviously gotta put them on solitary forever
Good point! But as a historical comparison Democrat journalists could say that the insurrection was worse than slavery or the Holocaust! Worse that all the world wars combined and the black death of the middle ages! Oops! I meant the Black death of the middle ages. (Gotta follow that AP stylebook...)
So this is the doing of one Christopher Wray, the man nominated by President Donald Trump.
So will he try to impede the Republicans in the November elections? Will he try to harass or arrest Republicans who dare to cross him?
Time for Mary Hoover’s little blackmail operation to end.
Code pink did so too, and destroyed stuff too I be,eive if I recall right
What do the Dems call the BLM/Antifa crap that burned down a dozen cities and where’s that investigation?
The Republicans should announce that if the left are e gojngmto call the protest,domes4ic terrorism. Then the right wil. Go after code pink and the ,eftie groups who did protests at the Capitol for domestic terrorism too. If the left wanna open this can of worms, then they can reap what they sow. Go after all blm rioters as domestic terrorists too.
Sweaty Shawarma deftly begs the question of whether January 6th was in fact an insurrection (which it wasn’t). Classic logical fallacy, and very common in today’s MSM.

I’ll be voting against McKinley for Mooney, but I do think McKinley will win.
It’s a shame regarding McKinley. Like I said before a Tea Party guy who did politics right. Had a successful business\engineering construction career. (Owned the company!). Then went into politics. That’s how you’re supposed to do it! Unfortunately, he stayed in office too long. I’ve said it before at the 10-year point (12 if in the Senate!) one becomes captured by the Beltway. Even if you are conservative, the allure is too strong. It’s too easy to rationalize away your principles for the charms of the DC establishment.
I do have a bit of a problem with Mooney. He’s a professional politician. Yes, a conservative one and one with all the right actions and positions. Still a professional politician, I look for reasons not to vote for that type now. In this case I will make an exception.
However, I expect McKinley to win. Why? It will be very easy to paint Mooney as a carpetbagger. He was politically active in the Maryland, ran for Congress there but lost. Being a strong conservative in Maryland is almost a fool’s errand. He came to WV to have a political career as a conservative. (So, I guess he is a carpetbagger!) That will be held against him! Not being a native son is a big deal here, true in most of Appalachia. Don’t bring up Rockefeller and Byrd it doesn’t fly for several reasons. Rockefeller’s money, people convinced themselves that somehow it would follow him to WV and economic magic would happen. It didn’t! Anyway, he’s old news and Byrd’s not being a native is older news. Different times then, different standards, particularly for Byrd. The other reason is McKinley gives the impression of being better at the pork game. WV’ians like their government pork and cheese!
Not even close! “A mostly peaceful protest” by Dem standards requires attacks on police, burning of substantial amounts of real estate and wholesale looting of private enterprises. None of that occurred on January 6. There is more evidence of bad behavior of Capitol security personnel killing an unarmed female veteran who was ushered in by the folks at the front door. I will NEVER agree with the Left’s attempts to classify the events of that day to anything more than what it was — a peaceful protest protected by the Constitution!
