“Never in my wildest dreams was I wear that so many Freepers support Putin.”

Putin is, was, and has been a Soviet his entire life. A career in and around INTEL, not unlike G.H.W. Bush (41) and his career. People should regard the history of Putin and before, long before Putin.

Apparently the Cold War hasn’t been over at all.

Ukraine? Amicus meus, inimicus inimici mei? Really? The glaring hyprocracy of our very thought of an engagement with all of our turmoil? That is an insane and thoughtless pathway to yet another one of those deep longterm entanglements. The whole existence as a country is turning into supporting the deep entanglements of our past. That’s the wrong path.

The spin will call it a “commitment” and perhaps historically it will be labeled as such but that would be a lie.

The EU seems disinterested, but the lack of petroleum products has their attention, they too appear to be avoiding the elephant in the room.

The late night comedian late night one liner comparing America to that guy that shows up at a party, gets everybody high on cocaine for free, leaves and... nobody even really likes him... makes more sense now than it did 50 years ago.

I have disagreed with my brethren Freeper over many issues in the past. (See my profile if you don't believe me) But I have always looked at it through the lens of "My 80% friend is not my 20% enemy." I have the same underlying belief in limited government, freedom and capitalism that they do. Not to mention the same belief in the constitution and the Bill of Rights.

However, this issue is different. Some gaps can't be bridged. Given all of the provable atrocities Putin committed, some people around here still support Putin and dismiss any photographic evidence as staged propaganda. Those same people will never condemn Putin. Any criticism of Putin is dismissed with some pretzel logic whataboutism. In fact, a lot of those people make no qualms about actually defending Putin. I can not respect people like that anymore and really could not care less if they are my allies anymore. I am very grateful and very happy they are in the minority here on the FR

Your post #5
Agree. Putin is a mad dog killer who has invaded a country and is slaughtering innocent civilians. The Putin cult will say anything to protect their god.

Well said and thank you. There are few Putinistas here but vocal. They follow scripts and tow the line like all cults.

I don’t care what Putin does or how he manages his country. Or if he wants to get the old gang back together.
I DON’T CARE. And neither should you.

No, warmongering idiots in DC are pushing war because Ukraine is their kid sex and money-laundering playground.

Putin just wants to be left alone. Eastern Ukraine already identifies with Russia anyway.
Putin has warned Ukraine repeatedly not to join Europe or host Neo-Nazis there.
How would FReepers feel if Putin gave arms and money to Mexican drug cartels while leading a coalition of Central American nations in a Western version of NATO.

“Russia draws a line on Ukraine, which used to be part of Russian,“

Does that include the Holodomor where Russia killed 4 million Ukrainians ?
Or is that just a inconvenient fact for the Russian supporters ?

Too bad Reagan isn’t still around; he knew reality and the evil of Russia.
He would have no patience for the pro Russian bull$hit propaganda that is posted here and other places.

With what? They have about 3/4 of their operational BTGs tied down in Ukraine.

My guess is that Putin will die soon from natural or unnatural causes, and the result is likely to be an even more militantly nationalistic and fascist Russian state. It will embark on an ambitious program of re-armament and retraining for its military, if it has the means, which can only be supplied by China, although the Chinese may not wish to support such a state, or will do so only to the extent that it can cause problems for the US and Europe without affecting China.

I DON’T CARE. And neither should you.

Did you stomp your feet and stick you thumb in your mouth after typing?

Geopolitics doesn't allow you to pick up your ball and go home in a tiff.

I've seen a lot of citations of John Quincy Adam's quote about not seeking monsters to destroy. But this isn't 1821, the oceans aren't nearly the barriers they once were, and sometimes the monsters come looking for you.

which used to be part of Russian, and then Soviet territory for centuries.

Most of Ukraine belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth far longer than it did to Russia, which is why it is quite culturally distinct. By your argument, it should go back to Poland.

Sorry, but it can’t “easily” escalate. There are many steps between shipping weapons and pressing the button.

Oh my!
Be careful there...

I think federal law prohibits the baiting of migratory trolls?
A glance at posting history shows so many ONE NOTE CHARLIES! May well be from the same IP?

Disagreements on strategy, tactics, funding... go for it.

Pushing for Putin’s second Holodomor; simply no way it can be defended.

MercyFlush has a nice primer on the topic, see his homepage.
