Cd'A might end invocations (Coeur d'Alene, ID)
Coeur d'Alene Press ^ | April 29, 2022 | Bill Buley

Prayers before Coeur d’Alene City Council meetings could be seeing their final Amen. The city, which recently took over scheduling pastors to give brief invocations, might end the decades-long practice.

It has long been handled by Pastor Paul Van Noy of the Kootenai County Ministerial Association, a Christian organization.

Mayor Jim Hammond said the city was given information by Van Noy stating it could be opening itself up to legal liabilities should it deny a person who wants to give the invocation. Hammond said that when the city recently took on scheduling of invocation pastors, it did so to give all faiths a chance to open meetings with a prayer. But he said cities have been sued for not allowing Satanists or other such religious groups to offer the invocation.

“It’s possible we could end up having to dispense with it all together,” the mayor said Thursday.

Councilman Dan Gookin and Van Noy met to discuss the invocation on Thursday. Gookin said they had a good meeting and he appreciated Van Noy’s perspective. “He made some very good arguments” They discussed eliminating the invocation and what that could mean.

“I’m not sure if that’s best for the city,” Gookin said. He said he wants to hear from others on the invocation, keeping it or ending it. “There are good arguments on both sides,” Gookin said. “There’s no clear-cut solution.” He said ending invocations to open council meetings would eliminate a lot of problems. “But is that really what the community wants?” he said.

Van Noy said the invocation is an invitation to the Lord "for his presence, leadership and guidance in our community. It is an invitation and request of the Lord to give wisdom and his counsel to our council members.”

Satan is busy in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, one of the last places in the USA you would expect to find this crap happening. This is so distressing. I hope the community and city take a firm stand to reject the possible ending of the invocation. The Godless atheists will sue and cost the city a lot of money. CdA is not a rich area and cannot afford such lawsuits.

Blonde in the Belly of the Beast moved there to get away from the hellscape in Seattle.

The good folks there fended off a bunch of Antifa during Riot Season but it seems like they are not immune from the rot.

I live in CA and many, many SF Bay Area Californians have been moving to Idaho over the last few years. I’m surprised prayers before council meetings even lasted this long. End of an era.

Coeur d’Alene is now a very expensive city. Liberals from Seattle and SF flock there to get away from crime but bring their politics with them. So this is not unexpected.

Unappreciated and inappropriate yes, but not at all surprising.

Why are towns, counties, etc so afraid of law suits. I live near New Orleans, one of the most screwed up blue cities in the country, Still, still, the city has a camel like disdainful aggorance towards suits. The idea is , so fine sue, piss your money away on fees and our glacial city court system, if you win your judgement goes to the end of the line, maybe, maybe we will get around to making you an insultingly low offer some time around 2060, Have a nice day and F you. Government entities have immense power to stone wall and ignore courts, regulatory agencies, and just anyone they wish, even the feds if you have some guts and don’t mind some discomfort.

My city had a watered-down invocation that didn’t mention God or Jesus, spoken by one of the council members, to avoid this sort of thing.

I’ve never seen that. Nothing like that in or near CdA. Maybe you are thinking of Portland or Seattle where there are miles and miles of bums camped on streets and sidewalks.

Thanks...we hike the trails around CdA a lot and often on the Centennial Trail, but I’ve never spotted that plaque!

I did a search for “Hobo Jungle” and found lots of towns had them in the 30s.

I love Oklahoma Slim’s description: “A hobo is a migratory worker. A tramp is a migratory non-worker. A bum is a non-migratory non-worker.”

I think most of those in the railroad camps were men looking for work.
