Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender federal official to be confirmed by the Senate, said in an interview with NPR that “there is no argument” among pediatricians and adolescent-specialist doctors regarding “the value and the importance of gender-affirming care.”
“Gender-affirming care” includes sex reassignment surgeries, puberty blockers, hormone therapy and social affirmation, according to an FAQ from Levine’s own agency, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
Levine’s comments dismissing concerns over “gender-affirming care” came during an interview with NPR ahead of her appearance at a health conference in Texas, a state that has taken measures to declare “gender-affirming” medical treatments for youth as “child abuse” under state law.
“One of the biggest messages I have at this time is really to speak about the challenges that the LGBTQI+ community face, particularly youth,” Levine told NPR. “The challenges come from very disturbing – and frankly discriminatory – laws and actions that many states are taking that are potentially dangerous, and costing the lives of young people.”
Levine also commented on recently published state guidance from Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, which was released in response to the HHS FAQ describing and supporting “gender-affirming care.”
Ladapo’s guidance declared that “social gender transition,” prescribed puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and gender reassignment surgery should not be treatment options for transgender individuals under 18 years old due to a lack of evidence and potentially irreversible effects.
“There is no argument among medical professionals – pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, adolescent medicine physicians, adolescent psychiatrists, psychologists, etc. – about the value and the importance of gender-affirming care,” Levine told NPR.
“I will disagree that there are many studies cited in the Florida statement – there are a few studies. I've looked at them. A lot of them say that we need more research. We agree,” Levine noted. “When you look at the forthcoming World Professional Association for Transgender Health standards of care and you see the hundreds and hundreds of articles, you will be able to see the difference between the research base for the standards of care and the few studies cited by Florida.”

Wouldn’t it be “gender affirming”, to administer therapy, not drugs, to a male who for whatever reason indicates that he does not identify as such? Ditto for a biological female who identifies as a male. Wouldn’t it affirm their gender to help them understand that they are a biological male, or female, as the case may be?
