In once mainstream Ohio, moderates struggle against pro-Trump rivals

Standing near a tractor draped with the Betsy Ross flag, Jane Timken, a former state GOP party chair, told a small crowd here this week how she was different from the other Republicans running for U.S. Senate.

“They wake up every day and try to get canceled on Twitter,” Timken said during a question-and-answer session. “At the end of the day, I’m a ‘get things done’ kind of person.” Later, in a brief interview, she went further: “Who’s not going to embarrass the state? That’s me.”

But Timken is getting little traction ahead of Ohio’s Senate primary election on Tuesday, even though her views largely match the “America First” agenda staked out by former president Donald Trump and she’s been endorsed by the GOP senator she wants to replace. Instead, the GOP candidates attracting most of the attention in this race to replace the occasional aisle-crossing Sen. Rob Portman are those who echo Trump’s brash style, too.

The latest fight in the race doesn’t even directly center on the candidates, focusing instead on whether Trump was hoodwinked when he endorsed author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance, who has enjoyed a sizable bump in the polls after earning the former president’s nod.

“Look, I love Trump, but he’s got it wrong with J.D. Vance,” says a man in a new ad sponsored by the Club for Growth, a conservative group that backs a different candidate. The ad notes that Trump also endorsed former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who is now frequently targeted by Trump allies for his willingness to work with Democrats. “How’d that turn out?” a woman in the ad asks.

Poor liddle moderates can't get traction!

Portman's preferred replacement for himself is barely getting 6%.

So sad.

Getting things done the way the Dems want. No thanks. I’ll take stalemate every time. Moving backwards is not progress.

I wonder if the authors had the same concern for the moderate that AOC challenged for her congressional seat.

As soon as Portman endorsed Timken, her candidacy was DOA, imho.

Winning a primary is worthless if you can’t win the general. Trump endorsed Romney because Orin Hatch, who loved Trump, asked him to.

It was earlier than that for me.

She took weeks to say anything about Gonzalez vote to impeach Trump TWICE.

And then it was weak sauce, typical RINO exposed.

Voted today. Much as I hate the idea, Vance will win it. His name is somehow at the very top of the ballot. Lazy voters won’t look any farther.

Ohio conservative have always known that Timken is in the Boehner/Kasich wing. She’ll get less than 10%.

Exactly. 95% of the time, any new government idea is harmful, so stalemate would be vastly preferable, with the ideal being getting 10 million [wrong] things UNdone.

Mainstream? Trump is MAINSTREAM! Secure borders, fair trade deals, strong military, making allies pay for their protection, law and order...the odd thing that the media never got was that Trump has been mainstream all along. What does he stand for that is so weird? It is the media (and a host of other institutions) that have gone off the rails.

Someone who’s political resume is a party chair isn’t getting traction in a statewide race for elective federal office?????

SHOCKING I TELL YOU... never held an elected governmental public office at all.. but you aren’t getting any attention in a statewide race for a US Senate seat, and its purely because you aren’t MAGA enough??

She’s largely running on a MAGA platform from what I can tell... she’s not getting traction because being the chairperson of the party doesn’t mean you are a good candidate or campaigner.. or that you have any political base to pull from.

I haven’t followed the Ohio race admittedly, but this article is nonsense and just a propaganda narrative... like nearly all MSM news today.

I have nothing against this woman, but with no name recognition (sorry chairman of the party and never held as far as I can tell an elected office before, not even small town mayor or something) doesn’t mean you have the base or the talents to get elected to a statewide office.

Add to the fact this seat is only open because Portman KNOWS he would lose a primary because of his actions regarding Trump and Jan 6 etc.. having his endorsement doesn’t help you. I will give you that, but to claim that is the sole reason you are going nowhere??? Please.

Same here.

They are both at least somewhat better than what we have in those positions now.

I saw a photo of Timken with Portman so she’s out.

I will NOT miss this vote...in PERSON.

Maybe I’ll camp out at those mail-in vote drop off boxes at night and rustle me a ‘mule’ with my Kimber. Hehehe.
