"It's not over," John Lucio said of his fight to free his mother.
Melissa Lucio was first sentenced to death in 2008 for the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Mariah Alvarez. After nearly 15 years on death row in Texas, Lucio was granted a stay of her scheduled April 27 execution by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday.
Calls for a court to review her case and save Lucio's life grew this week, garnering bipartisan support and inspiring rallies across the country. Rep. Jeff Leach, chair of the Texas House Criminal Justice Reform, Interim Study Committee, was one of several legislators to speak in support of Lucio's request for clemency.
"I believe so strongly that the system has failed Melissa Lucio at nearly every turn," Leach said in the committee's first hearing on April 12, days after visiting Lucio in solitary confinement at Mountain View Unit in Gatesville, Texas.
"What I want to know more than anything as a citizen of this great state -- is that the system can be trusted, that it's fair, that it's reliable. And right now, I have, as a policymaker, severe and sincere questions and concerns about whether that's true," he said, urging the importance of "pushing the pause button" on Lucio's execution.

She should have been executed the day the sentence was pronounced.
She killed the kid.
I can see it in her eyes.
I have been recently digging in this case.
On one hand, having seen police technique up close, they manipulate people into confessing, fake evidence, and outright lie at times.
On the other hand many truly guilty people exploit things like the Innocence Project and others to get away with murder.
She has some compelling evidence on her side that it was an accident, but she is also not the saint many try to portray her as. I don’t have a strong opinion on the case, but would support a pause for more review.
I'm a strong death penalty supporter, but I don't see enough evidence to justify capital punishment in this case. The "mother" appears to be drug-addled trash, and if she did not murder the child she is at least indirectly responsible for her death. But I like more evidence in a death penalty case. Nobody actually saw her beat the child, and it is possible that the child did fall down the stairs (or was thrown). She belongs in jail, but I don't know that I would vote for the death penalty.
Lucio was addicted to cocaine, and she tested positive shortly after Mariah was born; this caused her children to be placed in foster care. Three older children went to live in Houston with their father, and Lucio regained custody of the others in late 2006.[4]This woman is not innocent and the bleeding hearts need to find something else to protest.
I am coming back later for this graphic.
The quicker you close a case the faster you can get back to coffee and doughnuts and “Starsky & Hutch”. Guilt doesn’t enter in to it. Just pick family member or the most convenient person and build a case.
“Just pick family member or the most convenient person and build a case.”
Sadly this is too often accurate.
I agree with you. I heard today on the news that she had her children taken away due to neglect and abuse.

John Quade looked like a killer. You could see it in his eyes.
He made a career out of that.

Thanks for intelligent comments.
“I’m a strong death penalty supporter,...”
I’m somewhere between Vlad The Impaler and Atilla The Hun, myself. We don’t do it often enough, appropriately enough, or quickly enough.
You get stoned, blow a red light and kill others — your ass is GRASS in my system; no “absence of malice” for you, your malice was inherent in you getting behind the wheel impaired. #$^@# your ass! You’re MEAT!
You go all BLM and torch somebody’s livelihood — you’re TOAST! You DESTROYED somebody’s life over utter !@#%!@it! YOUR life is forfeit.
You get caught in paedo land — you’re DONE! It’s The End for your ass; no and’s, if’s, and especially no but’s!
...and I don’t mean in 20 years, I mean by high noon the day you get sentenced. The clock strikes twelve, and your carcass gets carried away by six.
“Justice delayed is Justice denied.”
And that goes for perps and victims alike.
And to the extend there’s been corrupt DA’s and Prosecutors trying to fraudulently railroad people — nix their Prosecutorial immunity, move them to the FRONT of the line, and fry their asses FIRST, IMO, because all this other “we can’t be too careful” delay, and kicking the can down the road forever is DIRECTLY emergent from exactly that prosecutorial abuse right there.
AND, AND, AND...
...these sad-sack wokesters wanna cry out about “gentle Jesus, meek and mild” wouldn’t do it that way; all they know is Jesus in white, and that’s not “Book.” Meek and mild was the FIRST time around; NEXT TIME — he’s coming back in BLOODY VENGEANCE.
Read it for yourself:
Who is this who comes from Edom,
With dyed garments from Bozrah,
This One who is [a]glorious in His apparel,
Traveling in the greatness of His strength?—
“I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
“I have trodden the winepress alone,
And from the peoples no one was with Me.
For I have trodden them in My anger,
And trampled them in My fury;
Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments,
And I have stained all My robes.
For the day of vengeance is in My heart,
And the year of My redeemed has come.
I looked, but there was no one to help,
And I wondered
That there was no one to uphold;
Therefore My own arm brought salvation for Me;
And My own fury, it sustained Me.
I have trodden down the peoples in My anger,
Made them drunk in My fury,
And brought down their strength to the earth.”

Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, ...

The more we conform the current system to some soft-pedaled Never-never Land, farce that shrinks back from delivering real Justice; the more we convey the deadly false notion that there never will be real Justice, the less people feel like there’s any good reason to adhere to the Law, the more lawlessness we spawn, and the more unrest over the lack of Justice we actually foment.
Laxity begets lawlessness. ALWAYS.

You have perfectly stated exactly how I view the issues you’ve addressed. I have often posted comments to the effect that in any truly civilized country the criminal justice system would not be conformed to the farce we now have in Western countries, especially in this one.
