Europe’s Russian gas in jeopardy, Ukraine braces for new assaults

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin threatened on Thursday to halt contracts supplying Europe with a third of its gas unless they are paid in roubles, his strongest economic riposte so far to crushing Western sanctions over his invasion of Ukraine.

...

But Moscow did offer a mechanism for buyers to obtain roubles by sending foreign currency to a Russian bank.

...

They must open rouble accounts in Russian banks. It is from these accounts that payments will be made for gas delivered starting from tomorrow,” he said on Thursday, adding that Europe had until now been getting some gas for free because it was paying in euros and then freezing them.

Excellent!

Now when the EuroWeenies pay in advance in Rubles,Russia should tell 'em: OK, the gas will be turned on as soon as you UNFREEZE the previously frozen Euro accounts, convert 'em to Rubles and deposit 'em in Russian Banks.

Until then, Europe can Freeze in the Dark.

Maybe NATO should have thought about a peaceful way to end this war instead of arming criminals and neonazis in Ukraine just to stick it to the Ruskies.

Congratulations to our brothers from Lithuania on such an achievement in the field of energy security!

Lithuania has completely abandoned Russian gas since the beginning of April. This is the first country in the EU to announce such a decision.

Except Putin won’t because he needs the money more than Europe needs the gas.

Yep! The EuroWeenies certainly miscalculated how dependent they are on Russian gas. Trump warned them.

Without any industry to speak of they sure can afford it until winter. Germany, not so much. The economists say the UK has already fallen into 1950s in terms of buying power of the population. I see 1820s in their future.

I think Germany gets ~40% of it’s energy from Russia. That’s not a good position to be in.

POTUS TRUMP warned about this back in 2018 and all he got for his trouble was ridicule......they sowed the renewable energy wind now let ‘em reap the whirlwind.

Maybe brandon and obozo can send ‘em some blankets.

The green lunatics won’t allow fracking in Europe. Now they can freeze or buy rubles.

Don’t the gas supply lines run through Ukraine?

I read that 80% of them did.

Lithuanian ports on the Baltic can supply Lithuania with LGN shipped Gas, at Spot Market Prices, for awhile, and if the LNG shipping is up to the task.

It's not all US flagged.

So countries pay in dollars or euros and then when the Russian gas company converts their payments to rubles Russia clams they were paid in rubles. ROFLOL!!! What a pathetic face saving joke! So if someone pays you $2000 for a used item and you buy a $20 gold coin, you can claim you got paid in gold?

“What are your calculations behind this stupid statement?”

Very easy. Russian trade with the EU is $170 billion.

That is 0.8% of the EU’s GDP and 12% of Russia’s. Losing 0.8% of your GDP is a mild recession. Losing 12% is a catastrophe.
